Fitting a vice screw.

Hi,

Could anyone give me some advice please in fitting this please.

It's the "York" vice screw which I bought from Axminster.

Had a quick look at it today as my bench isn't fully finished yet, however the only way a can see in fitting this is cutting or drilling into the stretcher which would really weaken it as it's only a 3 x 2 batten.

Any tips or ideas that I could use to get around this?

How about returning it for something more suitable :?:

Could you beef up the skinny stretcher, by screwing a length of (say) 4x2 alongside it?
