First Turning of 2007

Found a really scrappy piece of Laburnum while looking through my pile it was the top part of the trunk and there were 3 branches coming from it did not think I could do anything with it and chucked it on the pile for burning.
The more I looked at the wood the more I thought I may be able to do something with it.
I put it on the lathe and had a go at hollowing it it was a pig to hollow out and I lost about a third of the wood due to knots but I still managed to finish up with a not too bad 8 inch bowl.
What do you think?

Isn't it funny how quite often the most unpromising lumps of (fire) wood can lead to the most stunning results.

I'm not a massive fan of turned items but thats nice. The wood really turns it into something unusual.

Nothing special for the finnish I gave it a coat of shellac sanding sealer then finished with two coats of Briwax

Its 8 inches wide at its widest part and 5 inches tall

There is a definate pull which I have to resist on the basis that I really must learn how to use the tools I have got before I start buying any more.

I'll also admit to having a saved search on Ebay for a locally available suitable lathe

I wouldn't worry about that too much Andy... it's never stopped the rest of us :lol: anything shiny and sharp ...

Personally............. I don't like it.

Why .......... the piece is to upright, flowerpot like, with laburnum I feel it needs to be a more squat shape, allowing the piece to have width thus better showing of the grain and features, 8" x 5", maybe 3" in height would have suited the proportions better.

But as I say it's only my opinion, no offence meant,
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it's easy to compliment or criticise without truely knowing how the piece was turned, ie, what tools where used, what lathe it was turned on, what speed etc etc.

The piece however does appear to have a nice finish, and don't let me put you off with my criticism, it's the one thing that pushes me to improve with each turning, one day I will turn the perfect piece, I just keep trying.

Absolutely no offence taken I appreciate any kind of feedback good or bad.
I did not post the picture as some sort of design classic, and I agree it does look somewhat like a plant pot

But the whole point of posting the picture was to show that even some wood that you had thought was only fit for burning can often turn into a pleasant surprise!

My lathe is a Perform CCL
Speed was 500-800 RPM
Tools used were a Bowl Gouge - 3/8" Round Nose Scraper - 3/4"
