We took a trip to Mac timbers open day a couple of weeks ago and the girlfriend watched Fred Smith ..

He showed her how to make this goblet and when finished kindly gave it her along with a piece to do something with :D

Well a lathe from the depths of abandonment and neglect has been reassembled and after a short amount of tuition (not that I have a lot of experience  ) and practice her first item has been finished

Well done darling :D :D

Andy

superb andy i think she's got the makings of a fine turner, and with your encouragement she should do fine..

Andy, A big 'well done, Andy's Girlfriend', from me too  8) :D

Thats a fantastic first piece ...
as we can all testify to.. this caper ain't no walk in the park
& to have achieved that as a first outing, is very commendable.

get her to 'register' on the forum !...
seriously..

This actually makes me think ... I read in 'the mag' an issue or two ago, Mark Baker's introductory piece where he was expressing concerns that turning was possibly in decline, --- yet we find new contributors appearing weekly here.
Some of these guys & ladies will go on to become really accomplished, one has to assume -- ( not all, it would be fair to say that, obviously )... but its very good for the future that the appeal of "having a go" is perhaps on the resurgance
I remember starting out initially in Nov 07, clueless and blissfully ignorant ( and many may say little has changed   ), but did so, expecting to be very lonely and very isolated in trying it out... not knowing anyone else who did it, who would consider doing it, and who would even give it a second thought.
One of my mates even said " what you wanting to do THAT for, you're only 42 for god's sake " .. which I thought was a ridiculous thing to say.. but however.....
... I guess what I'm driving at, is that its very heartening to see people in the position that Andy's grilfriend finds herself in right now, almost on a weekly basis, - even more so, when they find 'here'... because that alone is a sure-fire way of maintaining the impetus and enthusiasm,
.. Its great to see.

And I don't feel lonely at all ! 8)

More power to you, Ma'am ... great start !

I think that's an amazing first turning, Very well presented as well.
definitely get her to register.
We have too few ladies on the forum. The more the better. IMO.
