right update,

Fetched the lathe pictured and yes im over the moon and it now has pride of place in my shed, (well, all the space to be honest my sheds tiny lol) Thanks NikNak.

Axminster was shut so no chisels yet. boooo

I reckon im gonna get three individual chisels crown seem to offer the best value for money i can see from axminster.

so its gonna be a RO gouge, spindle or bowl gouge???? and a parting tool

any opinions on these and maybe sizes would be excellent

Roughing gouge - I'd go for 3/4 ins or 1ins - mine is 1.5ins but smaller is easier to control(and sharpen) when starting out

Bowl gouge - probably 1/2ins but try to get one with a longish handle

Spindle gouge - either 1/2ins or 3/8ins

and parting tool 1/8 ins pointed

(btw i reckon you need a spindle gouge and a bowl gouge - if money is tight leave out the roughing gouge as you can always rough with the bowl gouge if needs must)

Tony,

I was being serious about the tools buddy.

I'll even send you them for free, then I'll wait for you to send me my tenner!

Just let me know if ya want them.

Deejay,

My point is that a confident decision about what you want is better than a half-a***d decision about something that you don't. The Sorbey set has been put together for a reason, good quality set that is very suitable for any beginner. Hope this doesn't sound too harsh, but I'm learning to be more direct and not mince my words, bit like BSM!

Well if you want plain speaking mate i'd say the sorby set (and most other sets for that matter) have been put together for a reason - to sell chisels incluiding those you might not really need.

I bought the "reccomended" selection 10 years ago , and i'm yet to find a use for the skew - because ive never done much spinde work - in fact if i can find it (its on the floor behind the lathe i suspect, where i chucked it in a temper last time i failed to gets to grips with it  ) I'd be happy to donate it to tony because its **** all use to me.

(very nice offer on the carbon steel set btw - and no offence intended in the rant above ;) )

Softy,

I really like you m8, you sound like a great laugh, and not in a 'i'm with stupid' way, but a genuinely funny, witty guy.

I so admire your use of the word 'jobbey' btw, one of my favs!

When I bought my 2nd hand lathe I also got a stash of CS tools which I have kept, I like to open the drawer occasionally and just shake my head at them (sorry Pete!).

I will be glad to send them to Tony, they should really be mocked by someone else for a while!

Anyway, glad your part of the forums. \:D/

See that proves a point. I use a skew a lot because I do a lot of spindle work. Must admit I didn't for my first year of turning though as it can be a sod to get used to at first. I use it more than I use my bowl gouge, for roughing down small spindles, and doing most of the work on them. Stick with the basics BSM suggested and you can do most things that you are likely to want to at first. . Lee's offer sounds good to get you up and running as well .

thanks deejay for the offer but by virtue of the fact that every man and his dog dog is offering to send their old cs tools i think i'd beter steer clear, especially if they put me off completely that would be a shame.

I had a look at Niknaks sorby starter set and i did expect the handles to be a lot weightier is this a normal weight as i think i would prefer something heavier??

Good job with that lathe, I was going to buy it but you beat me to it so I had to grab a new one from Axy in High Wycombe. It ought to handle pretty much anything you'll be able to throw at it for a long time.

sorry pete was lucky with my timing on this one makes a change though for me buddy cos normally im known as lucky Tony, if its bad, and can happen to someone it will happen to me!!!

My fault entirely, I was looking at the 900 because it's listed on the Axy site as having a swiveling headstock in the features bullet points. Turns out that the 1000 also has the swiveling headstock but it's not listed on the bullet points on the Axy site, however it is mentioned in the full text description. By the time I realised my mistake you'd snapped it up.

I'm still happy as larry with mine though

Morning Tony

any opinions on these and maybe sizes would be excellent

I've got a couple of Crown tools and they seem OK to me.

I'd go for three eighths in both the bowl and spindle gouges.

If you are doing spindle work, I'd have a look at one these if you don't already have one ...

(No connection by the way)

When you get a dig in, you'll be glad of it. :D

Cheers

Dave

Hi buddy i was fortunate to get new centres with the lathe off niknak, they are from axminster and seem very sturdy so will give them a bash.
