Hi all
Just finished the first attempt and I`d be interested in comments on it please.

http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll16 ... G_0663.jpg

My own thoughts are
1. More contrasting timbers would have been better I used some left over oak worktop and bits of mahogany, hard to make out the mahogany rings above and below the central feature ring.
2. Main central feature ring a bit drab suppose for a first ??
3. Should have tried a less ambitious design for a first.
4. Base maybe tad too big
Segmenting is not for the impatient among us  This sucker took about 4 weeks from designing to finishing but highly enjoyable all the same
Cheers
Steve
Ps HTH do you post pics??

Steve.
That piece to me is a very good attempt for your first
I don't think it matters how bland you might think it looks, you know that it as worked and will look even better on the next one,now you know what your up against.
You will now know how to improve on it.
Well done :D

That's a good start Steve I'm guessing you've learned a few things in the process

I admire segmented turning but it's not something I'd do meself... I have neither the patience nor enough brain cells to cope with three dimensional jig saw puzzles

Mornin' Steve.

Postin' photos from Photobucket -
Once you have uploaded your pics. to Photobucket, click in the small box beneath the photo you wish to insert in your post. Scroll down the page and you will see 3 choices, click on [Generate HTML and IMG code].

You now have 5 choices, for the thumbnail left click on the 3rd one down (IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended), this copies the code to your clipboard.

Go back to your post, right click, and paste, you have now inserted the thumbnail code. Click Preview to check before posting. You should now have a small photo which when clicked on should bring down the big photo.

First time on a segmented bowl  and your complaining [-( =D> . You have got to be joking, I think it is a great effort for a first attempt.

Well done,Steve, very impressive (particularly for a first piece :D )

Did you hollow it out through the top,or make it it two halves and glue together ?

Until such time as you can get your original link sorted to a somewhat smaller version Steve.

Extremely well done on the segments, patience is a virtue I have little of, I admire your tenacity.

I would not worry about the lack of contrast in the pieces, to me the subtle change in wood colour is preferable to high contrast except for very small highlights.

My only observation on segement positioning is that you should either aim for more symmetrical placing of pieces above and below a break or make sure the are all random.

Hi all
I thanks for all the helpful replies. Andrew - it was hollowed out as I did each ring, using the software you know the inner diameter of the ring above so hollow the one below it to that diameter. Chas - point taken about the symmetry I tried to build it like laying bricks as its stronger for the glue joints but the lightish mahogany rings below the central ring didn`t quite show it.
It was quite comical showing it to some old lads at our club as I`m not quite sure they look on it as `proper` wood turning more like some new fangled arty farty stuff
Cheers

You should be patting yourself on the back there Steve. I have never had the nerve of patience to try one.

Like Graham "I admire segmented turning but it's not something I'd do meself... I have neither the patience nor enough brain cells to cope with three dimensional jig saw puzzles"

If, as it looks like to me, that is a load of oak you have in it double congratulations are due as it's not the easiest stuff to turn at the best of times IMHO

Wow ! Thats a 'first effort' ?
It looks great Steve !
I'm in absolute agreement with what Chas mentioned... the subtle contrasts are really effective... The piece has a look of 'high quality' about it, which is definately not detracted from by the subtle contrasts.. in my humblest of opinions.
I'd say you'd achieved something pretty special there !
Definately something to be pleased with, and proud of.
Its great !

think it looks great, thought of using oak for a seg bowl myself but always dismissed it,but seeing that will have to give it a go if i ever get back to the lathe.
only thing i would say is the shape running up to the rim, doesnt flow. but all in all bl***y fantastic for a first :D

Now I like that. You often see this sort of shape on the American forums. Apparently it's copying a native american pottery style.

Pete

Must admit I had never seen a bowl this shape before buts its a design based on one in Ray Allens book on segmented turning. I did wonder if I had the patience to have a go at segmented turning but found it really interesting and got absorbed in it. Project 2 is floating round the grey matter so will see how that turns out. I wish I had tried woodturning years ago never thought it would be as enjoyable as it is, roll on retirement
Cheers

really? d'ya think? I quite like the slight change, almost like a gentle key change in a score (I used to like the old Bill theme as well)

as they say - it's all in the eye of the beholder :)
