First Kitchen Advice

Hello All,

Happy new year!

Quick question which I hope some of you could help with, I am planning to build a face framed kitchen, I plan to build the cabinets in mdf and doors possibly in mdf, I want to get a panelled look but its all to be painted so real wood isnt a major issue!

one item im unsure of is the faceframe, i have seen posts mentioning hardwood, could I simply use softwood as this is to be painted?

Hi

If your not using butt hinges you could use MDF for your frames. I use Tulip for all my frames in painted work with MDF panels. Beech is also a good option, paints well and hard wearing.

yes this might be an option with the mdf but would like to use butt hinges if possible.

So I can do a price comparison where would be best to look for tulip wood or beech?

Hi Dan,
Welcome to the forum.
When I was making kitchen cabinets professionally last year I was using tulipwood, which is about the same price as using softwood, however it is better for kitchens. The face frame timber dimensions were 30x22mm and the doors were 70x22mm with an MDF panel at 9mm I think.

I recently used these guys for machined timber, as I do not have the facilities at home for myself http://www.timbercut4u.co.uk/. However, alot of people on the forum said I should have used http://www.slhardwoods.co.uk/ as they are cheaper. I think both sites will give you prices for timber to compare yourself.

EDIT: I have just had a look at SL Hardwoods rough sawn timber price of what I would have needed to achieve the dimensions I required. I only ordered 2.4 metres though. However, with delivery added to the SL Hardwoods price, it was only £8 cheaper than TimberCut4u. Now, depending on wether you have the machines or time, ordered from TimberCut4u may proove more economical if you do not want to invest in machines or have the time to machine or space for machines.

The timber cut 4 u website just quoted me £174 for 2 peices of Euro oak @150mm x 50mm x 1.8m, and for a cuft in inch £124 :lol: Thats got to be wrong, is that machined for you Simon? I don't think I would advise anyone to buy from there if that's how much they charge. I use John Boddys and they aren't the cheapest, but the quality has always been good so far.

Hi, I am new to this forum but a very keen amateur carpenter. I had been shopping around for a long time to find someone who could send me accurately planed timber, i tried John Boddy and they werent even interested in quoting me unfortunately. i then tried timbercut 4 u and they delivered my White Oak in 4 days, perfectly machined to my dimensions and cut to size. the quality was great. I have sinced used them on 3 occasions and each time they have been excellent. They did seem expensive initially until i shopped around for readily machined hardwoods and people were either not prepared to do my small quantities or were very expensive in comparison.
Overall id reccommend timber cut 4 u very highly for a fast and good quality machined service.

In response to Marks comments above they only offer a machining service on the website so yes, youre price would be for planed and cut to length including delivery as that is how the site works.

I am just finsihing my scratch-built kitchen at long last. :lol: I built face framed carcasses out of tulip with tulip doors and a mdf panel. The kitchen is large and required a lot of wall and floor cupboards. The involvement of framed carcasses made the decision on door hinges a little tricky as I wanted "Blumotoion" soft close hinges. However it worked out well in the end.

The kitchen came back last week after being sprayed and its looking great. Am making the granite templates tomorrow. :lol:

Regardless it's still very expensive, and I find it hard to believe that about Boddys, not my experience at all.
