hello all, here is my first attempt at carving on one of my turnings, it is a piece of spalted beech which was turned a few weeks ago and set aside to dry, today i marked out 8 segments and carved away the majority of wood with a flex cut v tool in a proxon power carver and then i used a dura drit cylinder to round over the edges before a mixture of hand a power sanding. overall i'm pleased with it but i can see ways of refining the process to get a better result. I found it quite hard to photograph.
what do you think?

i like the shape. Looks like an onion,

not the shape that first came to my mind,

Is the carving hard on your hands, or does it help with the tool?

the power carver makes very easy work of it, but it can go too deep if your not carfull.

no i didnt, to be honest i thought this piece was just going to be a test piece that would be left unfinished but it went well so i finished it- i'm glad i did, the photo's dont do it justice its lovely- i'm really pleased with it :D

WOW, I like it very much, I take it that it is hollow, if so which comes first Hollowing or Carving. Is it all done from the one chucking point.
You did a super job on the carving and sanding. I dont think that piece will be leaving home. REgards Boysie

thankyou for all your comments, yes it is hollow, i hollowed it a few weeks ago and left it with a thicker wall than usual- then i have carved it whilist holding it in my hand, which wasnt as bad as i'd thought it would be.
it was inspired by john jordan's work but obviously not in the same league yet, I can reccomend johns new dvd, turners retreat have it on their e-bay shop well worth a look :D

as for it leaving home i've already got someone intrested in buying it

Way to go C, I have done a little carving as embellishment on my turnings, but not as symmetrical as yours. I like JJ's work and as you say yours is similar.

As far as not being in the same league as JJ, it don't look that far off.

When i said it looks like an onion, i was not being nasty. It was just the first thing that i thought of when i saw it. The way Andrew ( power tool ) described it is probably a better way.

Sorry C i did not mean to belittle your work :( . I think it is a very nice looking piece, very unique.

Quess i will need to think before i write.

Looks good to me George :D
What finish did you apply :?:
thankyou paul
when it was first turned i applied lemon oil which stops it from getting marked but allows it to still dry. after carving i have applied organoil hard burnishing oil which is similar to danish oil but 100% natraul and food safe

It was a 'Garlic Bulb' to me .... and what an absolute cracker it is too.
8) 8)
Usual 'impeccable standard' of work Corny ... its very nice indeed ... never seen one of those before, and it looks the "mutts nutts !".. Teriffic ! 8) :D

Heh heh... Indeed So, Pete....
I should perhaps have said more eloquently,....
"It looks majestic, with more than a hint of the sublime, and serves to illustrate the exhuberance of its creator " :p :p :p

I shall retire to the corner and consider myself reprimanded :p :p :p :p :p :p
