Found another rotten branch that had fallen off a tree in the garden, had no idea if there was any good wood in it but had an exciting time roughing it out with my large spindle gouge (my biggest chisel).

Decided to try and turn it into a candlestick, completly gutted that my pillar
drill wandered as I drilled the recess for the candle. Now my wife is wanting another to make a pair, not sure if theres enough wood left in the branch. I think its apple.

Still don't think I have the right technique for coves and beads though.

It's got a nice rustic charm to it :D
Was it dry,or is it likely to take on a life of its own?

Super dry, so I doubt it will move at all. Must have been off the tree for years. Alot of the tree's in my garden are very old and diseased so have branches that are dead on the tree. I think this one was seasoning for a long while before dropping to the ground and starting to rot.

The next challenge will be saving enough to make another!

You mean that soon your garden will have a lot of tree stumps!!

Nice rustic candlestick! a pair would be nice, it is just how similar you can do one. :-k

Ok I have started on making another one and am finding it ummm challenging shall we say. I have managed to find a bit of just about useable stump but this one is going to have alot more bark on it and be even more rustic!

I have started to rough it out but copying the other one is waaAaay tricky, is a cardboard template of the other one the way to go?

Finding it very stressfull and am worrying about taking to much material off or making a wrong angle, I've only got one shot at it!

Mornin' Matt.

Good on you for going for the copy. =D>

 My method (not mine originally) is to use 'de eyeball'. Put the blank in the chuck, sort the candle hole out, then start measuring from this end. Using callipers measure the width of the flared end, then with a parting tool go in until you have this width. Now measure along to the lowest part of the hollow mark this on the new piece, and using your callipers part in until you have the deepest part marked. Do this all along the piece, as well as parting in a little where the foot will be.

You should now have a bit of wood with a few grooves in it, all you do is use 'de eyeball' and join them up. Just like painting with numbers. :) Each of us tends to see forms a little differently, but if all match that is all you need.

One main trick you really need to pay attention to, a lot of folks don't, is not to make the first one too fancy. Always consider the form before you start, if you need to copy.

Good luck!
