i made this out of 12mm mdf and then veneer it with a vinyl bottom
in the idea to improve my skills with veneer as i want to make my new speakers so i fort the practice would be good.

i did have a few problem being varnish on to thick so i did have to take all the paint off
so ended up thining it by 50% ish and then wiped it on with cloth
used felt rather than velvet but this only cos it was a tester and thats all i had
used 1 hinge rather than 2. did not want to waist them.......
comments are welcome good or bad.

Nice box Lark =D>

So, are you going to use the same construction techniques and MDF on the speakers?

have to excuse my English as im dyslexic some times don't make sense

hey mike yer i posted about them on you page loved the work for all tables and bed plus the loft
you must be very good i guess you had to make up your snooker table
up as there very big :)

the main thing comes to mind seeing the speakers is the edging guess you have used a router, chafer or like roundover but then got the veneer over it as well.... would be nice to know how to, as it looks nicer than plain old square edge.....

plus i see slot port rather than the plastic tube port. i know slot for subwoofers mainly car. so that might be interesting if there maybe a program for that as the maths can be a alot to work out :) for the one you have done what looks like its as wide as the wood as in the side of the speakers are also the sides of the port.
i use avforums and diyAudio they are very up on alot speaker stuff

tony i will use mdf as i get on with it alot better then ply and ill dye it black might use beech veneer.... and jasper circle jig is great for the speaker holes. but i guess kinda the same way with bracing in side

i tried iron on veneer and it scared me away from it for awhile but the glue on veneer is quite easy to use

speakers i have already made.
the speaker parts are from the B&W cc6s2 speaker were new managed to get them cheap and i have only used it 1 time as i have the real cc6s2 anyway but it does sound better might be because the speakers where new.... this vinyl self stick

Hi Lark,

My speakers are transmissions lines so internally there are a series of baffles which form a long taper from behind the drive unit to the port you see at the bottom. It's a different design to a ported box.

This http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/ipl_m3tl_ ... n_line.htm shows the design and the pic at the bottom shows the internal layout.

Mine are made from 19mm pre-veneered MDF and the edges are done with iron on edging to cover the bare MDF. I made them with mitred corners at the top and then ran along the edge of the mitre with a straight router bit to put a 10mm (approx) groove along the top edges. I then thicknessed two pieces of solid ash into 10mm square strips and glued them into the grooves in the top edges.

Finally i made the front pieces from a piece of solid ash, cut them to shape, routed the edges with a 1/2 inch roundover bit and glued them to the front. Once that was glued on I ran the same bit over the top edges to round them over too.

I hope this makes some kind of sense. It is a lot easier to do than describe! I wish I'd taken some pics while I was making them.

Cheers
Mike

yes i have seen a video of the cutting the side with router using hardwood strip thats how i fort it might be done. might have been youtube

i am only part time worker and veneer mdf is about £40 per sheet or more bit much for me really and a starter in wood diy and speaker but speakers was reason why i moved on to more wood projects.

and i am learning by doing and internet videos. mostly Americans and then i found this site from lumberjocks they wanted to make an old english game. said said bout this site :)
