My first thought on seeing the picture of her at the lathe was to wonder if the headstock could rotate a little towards here as she is reaching over a long way and it doesn't look that comfortable.

Yes good point Duncan.I saw Chas had done this with his grandson.
But she was so eager there was no stopping her

That was automatic Paul not just for Colwyn, as it's become my normal method to avoid leaning over.

One thing that became very apparent was how much strength you use to hold a tool against rogue grain forces. Even though you practice a relaxed hold on the tools normally it is only when a youngster has difficulty stopping a gouge from chattering on the rest do you realise how much pressure you apply at times.

But teaching him to hold the tool to his body and swing his body to form the cut pattern did as much to make it sink in to my consciousness as his.

Well done AMY you look right at home there.
Paul it looks like you may have to ensure that Santa's sack has a Kevlar lining, after all we wouldn't want her set of new gouges and chisels to poke through his sack  .
My daughter was always fascinated at craft fairs with the pole lathes but we never had the space for one  .
Again well done to the pair of you. =D>

Thanks Keith.
she did take to it quite well.Ithought she would have one little go and give up but she didn't,and now she can't wait to have another go.
It would have nice to keep my Perform lathe for her,and possibly her sisters, but just don't have the room for it.
