Finishing advise needed for a Newbie wood worker.

Hi,

I have recently started a coffee table project and I am completely stuck for choosing a good brand of Stain.

I was thinking of a Walnut finish for the top and bottom shelves with the legs being painted White.

Have you got any recommendation for my list below;

A treatment for the Knots to prevent discoloration through the white finish?

A good Pre stain conditioner, Walnut Stain and a protective finish for the table top? and do these finishes help to protect against things like tea cup ring stains?

Best type of paint/base coat for use on indoor furniture?


I am sure my list of questions could be longer but I wont try to overload the post.

There's lots of choices out there and personal preference comes into play as well. You can use a stain then top coat or a coloured top coat. Stains can pick up any imperfections in the surface so thoroughly sand to 180 grit at least. Use knotting under paint . Personally I quite like oil finishes like osmo or fiddes which can be plain over stain or coloured. For paints I like the little Greene acrylic eggshell for woodwork though there's many others just as good. Quality finishes tend to be pricey as the ingredients can be expensive and the marketing/ advertising adds a bit too.

Make sure you get a good knotting solution for under the paint. I can personally guarantee you'll be very dissapointed in you use the jewsons one

You can wipe down knots with meths to remove surface resin prior to any coatings.

I guess you need to think about the top coat, i.e, if you want to use waterbased poly, you'll need a waterbased stain.

I think if you can find a coloured topcoat as @Jones suggested, that'll be a great option.....

Make sure to sand all the edges very well,I can see some tell tale marks on the pine top egdes from the circular saw,those will definitely show up when you apply any finish.The stain in particular.
Osmo do colour stains too,check them out as the Osmo finish is easy to apply and the finish can be outstanding if applied well.

My wife and I have upcycled all our pine bedroom furniture. I sand it and she does the rest. She used a specialist furniture paint called Frenchic (Google it). Four costs and then two costs of clear finish. It then cured over a couple of weeks. Looks fantastic. Good left pine, just treated with mineral oil
