Hi ,

I just topped up on some more 2 x 4 for my shed build . Funny thing is the new 2 x4 i got from the same timber yard is a different size .

Is this usual ?

As an example my first order of timber is around 44mm on the 2" side and the latest lot is only 39 mm which is going to mess up my plans a little and means i will need to avoid using the two diff sizes in the same area .

Should i maybe give them a call , i dont want to be picky , i just dont know what kind of difference is reasonable to expect . I thought a couple of mm might be normal , but this is more than twice that .

I am not in any hurry mind , just having pulled a muscle in my back last week lifting and digging in prep for the base , been for a nice massage just , at least i thought it would be , her nickname is thumbs of death , agghhh ....no pain no gain they say !

Cheers , David ':?'

If I were you, I'd give them a call and try to find out what's going on. As long as you have already used the 39mm stuff for anything and, provided they have some more 44mm timber in stock, you may be able to swap it. :)

I've come across 44mm-thick "4x2" timber before but 39mm is practically 1 1/2"!

the 39mm is more like ly to be 38mm which is the thickness of CLS. which usually works out 12mm off the nominal size. Normal PAR is around 6mm off the nominal giving you 44mm. Then you can get regularised, eased corners etc

You have bought two different specs of timber.

Many thanks Olly , Jason ,

I have just checked both bills and they both state 47 x 100 .

The actual sizes to my best ability are

original stuff 95 x 44

new stuff 92 x 39

i will give them a call in the morning .

Dunbarhamlin , she was tiny and slight but boy it felt like a half ton weight on me at times , i have to take up pilates or yoga apparently or use a fit ball ... too much time in front of the pc maybe !!!

Many thanks again

If it says 47x100 I would have expected it to have a sawn finish and be within 1-2mm of the sizes.

If it was graded & regularised then it would come in at around 45x95

If it were CLS then 38x89 smooth faces & rounded corners

And PAR softwood 44x96

Can you post a pic of the surface & corners also any stamps on the side of the timber

Hi ,

just posted some photos at my picasaweb thingy .

It looks like the new 2 x4 varys on the 4" from 89 to 92 mm .

The original stuff is lovely cls and 95 x 44 to within half a mm
consistently.

As i asked the yard for more of same and showed them the original bill
when i ordered them i feel i do have a case .

Thanks for all the advice .

The original timber is a bit too large to be "CLS" but it is a regularised & eased Timber which means after sawing & drying it has been rough planed and had the corners eased.

The second batch looks like a poor attempt to produce a board to "CLS" sizes which are generally 12mm less the nominal.

I would say you have a very good case for getting it changed over, just hope they have some more of the better stuff in stock as that may be the reason they supplied you with an alternative.

If i was sent 4"x2" timber 39mm thick then i would be sending it back. It's not much thicker than 11/2"x4".

Many thanks guys ,

Went to see them saturday , all sorted hopefully .

It was cls they gave me , just need to wait for tanalising to be
done and the will deliver 25 new pieces so i can start to make the base , so next weekend i can crack on a bit more

Cheers !

jason , good advice , thanks for your pm

I find that you have to keep on the ball with timber yards.

All too often someone will try and sneak in lower grade and if you don't pick it up, next time you'll get a bit more of the stuff.

That's why it's so important to get a good relationship going, but even then, I don't trust 'em completely.

Blimey... I sound a right old moaner!

I'm not... Honest!
