Hi, I am making a side table from chestnut. I want to keep the wood colour but soften the appearance of the grain a bit because it looks very dark when oiled. Would the best thing be a grain filler, a finish (something like Rubio) with a colour in it, or both? Thanks

My recently finished 8 person chestnut zipper style dining table was finished off with a blend of white spirit, satin varnish (solvent based) and pure Tung oil with a splash of boiled linseed oil added. First coat was brushed on, the wiped after 10 mins with subsequent coats applied with a soft rag etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give it a try.
