Hi there,

I'm trying to find somewhere that sells suspension file hangers for making a filing cabinet drawer. Or should I just use some metal rod from B&Q/Screwfix etc.

Thanks

Jonathan

If you look at a metal file box you will see that the system uses a suspended bar.
The bar is not round, but probably 12 plus mm in width.
The files themselves, have a plastic tab at each end that is cut away in the centre to slot over the metal suspension bar. This supports the file and allows it to slide along the bar.

This system can be recreated using wood instead of metal, making sure the corners of the bars are well rounded off to prevent binding and easy slideability of the files.
Fastening them to both ends of the drawer would need some sort of slot bracket for the bar to be hung on. This can be then glued and screwed to the drawer, back and front.

I am sure there are other options but I hope this helps you!

Hi j,

If you are using standard suspension file-pockets, whatever you slide them along has to fit the notch in the metal ends of the file itself. So as long as the metal rod will fit into the notch, I would see that as the easiest option, if you can't buy a the proper hardware. I am sure you can.

If not, whilst I am not quite ready to throw out my old cabinet, if I can get the hardware out, you are welcome to it. I don't use it for files.

I got it out :D

Measures:

38.5 cm across the runners
25 cm high
32.5 cm front to back.
It is pop-riveted together. I could drill it out for you and dismantle. You would just need a dozen small nuts, bolts and star washers to re assemble it.

It isn't rusty and it does take standard file pockets. There are two threaded holes in the rear cross bar, which I assume used to take some kind of fixing rod. .
Let me know if you need it and it's yours for the cost of postage.

John,

Thanks for offer and taking the time to take it out.

I'm actually planning to build 3 drawers. It looks like the best/easiest plan is to use some steel rod. I'm not sure anything off the shelf will do as I'm looking at making drawers about 600mm deep.

Thanks again

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

No problem.. I see why this is no use to you. It was just a thought! :D

I can just leave it at the foot of the drive for the scrappie!

All the best
