Hi folks,

Last week I bought afew odds and ends for the workshop, among which was a Jet JTS-10 tablesaw. This is the first table saw I have owned (and used!) and hopefully I'll get enough time to play with it this weekend to write a small review, however, one thing that stands out to me is that the rip fence is utter, unmitigated junk.
I see quite a few threads in here about fences for router tables, but has anyone purchased an aftermarket fence for their tablesaw? If so, I would be interested to hear any comments about it.
(I'm slightly perturbed that the much vaunted 'Incra' fences appear to cost more than twice what the saw did!)

Thanks folks,

V.

Hi Vormulac

What you have bought is part of the Jet benchtop range which, I believe, is aimed at the hobbyist market.

I would recommend that you go back to where you bought it and use the phrase "not fit for purpose". They should replace the fence and, if not, get them to take the saw away.

Most of the aftermarket fences are high-end and for that you have to pay.

Cheers
Neil

Axminster do an aftermarket fence, IIRC its in the region of £50. Have not used one though so cannot vouch for its accuracy or stability.

I agree that fence is a critical component of the saw and needs to be accurate. It does appear however that you have to be willing to spend a fair amount of money to even start getting a decent fence and table. The Kity 419 and Scheppach 2010 seem to be at the bottom end of the 'accurate fence' range IMHO, retailing at around £350 for the basic saw up to approx £650 if you want legs and sliding tables etc. If you want to go a little larger (10" rather than 8") then the SIP CI saw and the new Axminster perform saws look good - the Axminster looks and feels like excellent value at under £600 with sliding carriage but I have only seen it, not used it.

It's for this reason I have held off buying a table saw until I can afford the accuracy I want. Having looked at the Axminster offering for £100 (BTS10PP ? from memory) I decided to save rather than struggle with a budget tool.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do, but if you have not used it in anger then the shop should take it back (hopefully!)

Steve.

Thanks for the input folks, I'll check that Axminster fence out. Sadly this was as far as my budget goes for a tablesaw, doubtless spending four times as much would get me a better one, but it's not an option (although funnily enough, the kity and the 2010 that StevieB mentioned were the two I was looking at before I took a long hard look at the bank balance and resigned myself to something cheaper!).

Thanks again guys,

V.
