Morning all!

Over a few beers with a mate the other day, the conversation swung onto the topic of 'If money was no object - what would you do?'.

He's really into guitars and music production, so he described in detail how he'd have a massive studio with all the gear etc..

When it was my turn, I have to say i was a bit stumped! Despite lurking on here for a while, I still don't have too much of a clue as to what is the 'holy grail' of tools.

I did know that I'd want a work shop with separate areas. A large main workspace to house a large TS, probably a bandsaw, SCMS, RAS, router table, pillar drill/morticer, PT'r, Sanders etc.. I'd also want a large workbench with all the relevant vices/dogs etc..

I'd also want a separate, humidity/temp controlled room just for timber storage. One end for 8x4's with a large selection of sexy hardwoods (as well as someone to tell me how to work with them   ) at the other.

Whilst I'm at it, I'd like another, closed off area for design/office work. At the mo, my 'design studio' is a stack of sawdust covered printer paper under my workbench. I'd like something akin to an architects desk with some uber-computer with SU and a massive monitor. Just because I can!

Along with all that, I'd have a kitchen area and toilet. Hell, perhaps even a bed!

Not sure on size for the whole thing. The main workspace would need to be big enough to take 8x4 sheets being swung around the place, with high ceilings.

Hmm, why does the phrase 'All the gear and no idea' spring to mind?

Soooo. Time, money and planning rules not being an issue: What would you do?

Bryn :D

This is easy.. I'd have Norm's workshop!

Have to agree Wizer,
Think i`d have to put my hat over the web cam though, don`t want everyone seeing how many coffee breaks i have

Nice selection of hand tools, good bit of space, some well chosen power tools and a lightly oiled Kylie Minogue would make the perfect shop

Everything Ironballs said, plus a large fridge to keep the beers cold for when the power tool work is finished!

Malc :D

Well I think that David Charlesworth has one of the best workshops around

Take a look here for more details.
I would much prefer this to Norm's.

Along with a main machine/work shop, I'd have to have a separate room for finishing, another area for timber and material storage and, if possible, another small to take a break and lie down when things don't go as according to plan!  :D

Fascinating. I note that nobody said 'what I already have'. (Me included.)

20'x10' is enough for me, the only other thing I need is time, unfortunately employment get's in the way of that :( , still, I built it with retirement in mind so I'll just have to be patient, Norm's welcome to use it anytime he like's.

Rich.

My ideal would be double what I have.......but the big difference is that I would have a seperate area for finishing, and an entirely seperate workshop for metalwork. It can take me 4 hours to get the workshop cleaned up and swapped over from metalwork-mode to woodwork-mode.

I don't particularly want any more machinery........except for a better dust-extraction system......but just some more bench space and floor space.

Now, as for location......somewhere near the Kwando river in Namibia or the Chobe river in Botswana!!!

Mike

Off topic maybe but why those locations Mike? Sounds to me like some history or decent stories there.

My manager got married in Zimbabwe, that was 6 weeks ago and he's still not allowed to cross back into SA, some trouble with having an english passport apparently, though his family have lived in Zimbabwe for nearly a century. (RHODESIA)

Roy,

12 or 14 years ago I took 6 months to drive the whole length of Africa, camping in the bush every night and having the time of my life. I have since been back a few times, and have a car out their permanently with all the camping gear etc. Botswana is my idea of paradise.........as was Zimbabwe (and it will be again).

Funnily enough, my fantasy workshop wouldn't be much different to where I am now.

All I need to do is rebuild the roof giving me a big enough attic to accomodate a showroom and office...

Norm's workshop is OK but he doesn't have a sprayshop.

David C's place looks great but must be a nightmare to heat in winter. I'd be sticking another floor in!
