I have a test booked for next week with Vision Express, so I'll see how that goes.

Which is what I was trying to say earlier. Probably quite normal. But if you are worried you are doing the right thing in getting a sight test. I have to say that, my wife is a (lapsed) optometrist !

Just to comment on the independent vs high st. My wife went to an independent recently and has been back 3 times to have her glasses adjusted and they were still not right. I've also found vision express to be excellent so I go there. Whilst I was booking my appointment the girl serving is looked at my wife's glasses and asked if they felt ok because they didn't look right. My wife explained the saga. A minute later she was seated and the girl was taking measurements etc. 10 minutes later my wife had pads fitted and a number of alterations made to her glasses. The cost £2 or thereabouts for the pads. My wife is now delighted and said she'd go back to vision express and was really happy with them.

Thats good if you're going to that same store to be served by the same staff. However, as a retail chain, it doesn't really mean anything. You're going to have good staff and bad staff in all retail chains.

My brother is an optometrist, he worked for specsavers as a saturday boy while he was still at school right through to doing his pre-reg year with them. The targets they have to hit in terms of numbers of patients through the door mean they can't give nearly as good service as he can in an independent shop where getting it right matters more.

Whilst that is true I've always found Vision Express to be excellent and in my opinion significantly better than Specsavers.

They keep all of the photos of my eyes on record so that if they spot anything they can go back and compare it to my previous results. They were doing some of the tests (pressure test) long before a lot of independents were, probably because they could afford the kit.

I've had excellent experiences with them. Can't fault them.

We've been going to our local independent one for nearly 50yrs.
May not be the cheapest but excellent service.
They spotted a problem with my wife and referred her to a hospital consultant who treated her eyes with lasers to prevent future serious issues.
