Hi,

I'm new here so go easy on me please!! :D

I've had some gates made (I would have had a go at making them myself but only recently moved house, stuff still all packed up etc and needed them asap!) in Idigbo and was wondering what the best treatment would be for them.

The joiner who manufacturered them recommends Micro porous stains (Sikkens light oak) but the local paint shop says oil! Argh!

Any recommendations please?

I would go with the sikkens Filter 7 woodstain on top of Sikkens Cetol HLS basecoat. Oiling will produce a nice finish but will require regular re-oiling while the sikkens will last for a good few years between coats.

Thanks, the Filter 7 and Cetol HLS are the exact two the Joiner recommended me to use (couldn't think what they were called when I posted! Old age!)! To be honest I would probably take the Joiners advice over the paint shop anyway but thought I'd check here aswell!

Not had much experience of oils, out of curiosty how often would oil need re-coating?

To keep it looking like new you would probably have to oil it a few times initially and probably about 2 times per year but it depends on the timber and the oil used.
