Hi All

Just a heads up on the Evolution Rage circular saws, I looked at them in B&Q today and they do seem a good bit of kit but I was shocked at how bloody heavy they are so my advice is try to find one to see if it's not to much to lug around before you buy...

I was in B&Q recently and bought a different brand of mitre saw (Dwalt) but I was quite impressed by the Evolution promo video they had running in the powertools section. The ER SCMS was apparently slicing through sheet steel and scaffolding poles with a TCT blade. I have no idea how accurate or repeatable the cuts are with these tools hence the purchase of the DW.

My B&Q (and maybe yours) are selling the Rage 3 (that's the mitre saw variant) for £119.95 (down from £174.95). Not quite sure why you'd want a mitre version of this multi-purpose saw but there you go!

Or maybe I'm trying very very hard to not feel very sorry for myself at having just bought a Rage 2 for much more than £119.95

Actually ...no...I'm not that sad as I reckon the Rage 2 is much more useful to me. Really. Definitely. I'm 100% sure about that.

Are they actually any good though?

I can't imagine they would fulfill the requirements of most people on here as the blades must leave a poor finish on wood, and how accurate are they too?

I think i will stick with my Fes'.

I agree with you...and which prompted my comment re why anyone would want a mitre version. The benefit for me is that I have a man-mountain of old timber taken out of the renovation project ...timber just bristling with nails and I've wasted two chainsaw blades to date.

Quick mini-review of the 14" Rage 2

Heavy - which is a good thing when you're chucking on old knarly nail ridden timber for cross-cutting.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. You do get used to cringeing everytime the sound and motor speed changes whenever it hits something metal...until you remember that that's what it's designed for and so you allow yourself a small smile

Makes cutting up timber from the renovation project a doddle. Previously with the chainsaw it was pick up piece of wood, examine closely for nails, decide on cutting point, examine even more closely for hidden nails, make cut. Very very long and laborious and if you were really lucky, the chain saw would find that nail that you missed everytime.

With the Rage2, it's plonk, cut, plonk, cut. Brilliant!

Cut finish is surprisingly good. If I were to use a sacrifical piece of timber then breakout would be minimal, I reckon...although I am judging this on a new blade.

Not happy cutting 100 + year old oak. Lots of smoke and a black blade so not good in this instance.

Dust collection primitive. There's a little pull out tray underneath the blade slot that you pull out to tip out the sawdust. No extraction points. But - hey - who cares? I use it outside on a big plastic sheet and that works.

A bit of a thug...but really great to use :D
