Elm burr and rosewood egg thingy!

Had an idea, so had an experiment!
I quite like it, even though it gets strange looks from vistors! I wondered what you folks reckoned?

The top and bottom are natural edge bits of burr elm, with a thin rosewood spindle holding it together.

I am not sure to be honest.

I am sure that it is lovely wood and you have turned the natural edges very well.

I reminds me a little of the eggs in Alien

That was my first thought when I saw it! Or maybe something from 'Cocoon'.

I like it, but I maybe would have kept the internal spindle plain, just flared out a bit at each end, so that the spindle turning didn't compete with the beautiful burr - that's if I could even contemplate making something as intricate as this :-k

Lovely timber and a nice finish.
Not so keen on the spindle in the middle,the two wood don't match i think.

I like the idea and the egg....really attractive artistic piece IMHO. The spindle is distractive though at least for me.A simple palin perhaps black spindle would seperate and leave the egg as the prominent feature.

Brilliant idea, but as has been said the spindle is far too noticable, and takes the eye away from the nice egg bits. Don't know what to suggest as I don't think invisible wood exists :lol: Maybe though a plain spindle in matt black might be a lot less noticable?

I like that, I dont know why but I do.

If you put a small LED in the top part I think it would show it up even better.

Like a veloceraptor egg or something like that.. and I love John's LED idea, thats a great thought. 8)

If the spindle could be made to be really inconspicuous, I think it'd help the piece... not that there's anything wrong with the turning of it or anything.. it just distracts the eye a little...

Thats is a great concept piece, and I'm reckoning with that little bit of 'fine tuning', it could go from great to 'wicked' :wink: ...

Thanks for all the kind replies and useful critique.
I'm glad it's caused a reaction!

I hadn't really thought about reworking it, but now i think about it imay well change the spindle as suggested. If nothing else just to see what it's like.
It's glued in place, but should be easy enough to deconstruct.

I'm thinking about plain, maybe a long shallow cove, ebonised to the point of cinders. (I think the arty term is 'distressed'! Guess who just bought a new blowtorch?!).
Thoughts? Too distracting again?

John the idea of an LED is genuis! I'll have to give it a try! Should play up the alien spawn egg aspect....:twisted:


Anyway keep the comments and ideas coming, it is proving very useful!

Piece of silk ( type ) cloth in the bottom half.. either deep purple or maroon.. with a smaller turned egg sitting in that, lit with the LED in the underside of the top section ?

All rather 'Goth' and "Myth & Magic" ... i'd give it a go ! :wink: 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Not convinced by the Goth route Jenx, but i see the potential!

I hadn't considered clear acryllic. Not too sure at present.... I'm a sucker for wood really!

As to dimensions, it's around 4" diameter at the widest, and around 7" long altogether.

Hi All

I too like this and as I was reading down my thought mirrior Dalboy's about using a prespex rod for the spindal.

Also I don't know if its the pictures or not, but to my eyes the tops of each part could have done with being more vertical. As it looks at the moment they formed a sharp edge and not a clean line like an egg.
