It's even more than 10% when you add the photo fees and the PayPal charges.
However, how else are you going to sell your gear and have a world marketplace provided for you?
They charge that because they can.

Ebay is not an auction site no more, simple reason isyou have shop owned retailers selling their wares...

To the op,wait for their free listing day? and 10% is not much as Laird said...in a real auction it would be 17.5% plus commision fees higher than 10%

And they do diddly squat when notified of anyone trading in counterfeit articles. Just as long as they get their fees.

The phrase 'ethics' is seldom found in the same sentence as US big-business. Think Google 'sniffing' all that wi-fi data as their cars scoured the planet. Think the unwillingness of Facebook to put on their site a simple button that kids could click on if they were concerned about a dodgy contact.

You're right; their "final value fee" wasn't this high until about eighteen months ago. :p Whenever I do list something, I always add a note saying that I would prefer to complete the transaction "outside" of eBay, for the sake of saving money. Most of the buyers I've met have been happy to do this and I don't think eBay have picked up on it once.

I'm sure it's against their rules, though...

There are bound other sites where you can list items for free, locally but, as has already been said; eBay is an international marketplace.
