Does anyone know if you can buy the Earlex Steamer in Britain? Has anyone used it?

Nick

Nick,
we bought one of the Earlex steamers from Amazon at a special odder price, but there are loads of other retailers. We actually wanted it to steam hay for the horses, so it's been used daily, sometimes twice in a day, for weeks on end with no problems. If you let it boil dry it will cut out to prevent damage, but you must keep the unit level else it could burn out.

If you mean the sort of portable steamer sold for stripping wallpaper, the answer is definitely yes - widely available at the usual diy outlets. Would you be imagining one hooked up to a length of soilpipe for some wood bending perhaps? If I ever got round to trying steaming that is what I would use.

Hi Nick,

I did exactly what Andy T suggested above some 3 years ago to bend a piece of oak.
The steamer worked well and you can refill it with water easily so that you don't lose your "head of steam".

Hey, What a good idea. I might try that with ours when not using it to steam hay.

I never thought of that. I bought one half price at Focus closing down sale and it has never been out of the box. seemed a good idea at the time.

On the subject of steaming. Am I the last person to the see the YouTube clip of making a Jarvi bench? It is amazing, with some serious steaming. I've put it on our website under Video.

Nick, last week Toolstation had the Earlexes on special offer.

Have a look on their site -- under £30 definitely.

Thanks for linking to those videos on the BW site - they're really good quality in all senses, and I think they enhance the site too.

E.

PS: there's an oddity on the BW web site with YouTube videos. The iframe size doesn't match the YT player. I found this using the Android browser (on my Samsung tablet - haven't looked at the code yet). You'll get a PM sometime in the next couple of days with the detail.

Thanks, Eric. I noticed that too last night, but didn't know what it might be. Perhaps I need to change the width of the central pane.

They seem to work better on the www.living-woods.com site.

Cheers

Thanks, Eric. I've just resolved it. I'd forgotten to resize the clip before embedding. If I had a £1 for all the things I had to remember when it comes to passwords and settings etc....
