Hi
I have just bought a DW746 but I can't figure out how to connect it. Basically, I don't recognise the electrical socket type on the saw.
If anyone has this saw, is it supposed to come with a lead?
I have a dedicated 16A circuit ready, I just can't figure out what plug I need to mate with the saw...
I have emailed DW, but I was hoping to get the saw set up today (Saturday)
Cheers

Hi Max

Welcome to the forum.

I'm assuming that you're in the UK, is that correct?

If so, this link shows you the 16A connectors.

If your near a Screwfix store, they're open on Saturday. I don't know whether B&Q would stock them.

Cheers,
Neil

PS If you're near Nottingham, I think I have a spare that you could have.

What you need is probably what's known as a "Schuko" or type F connector. It's basically a 16amp version of your standard continental plug/socket now commonly fitted to most machines now sold in Europe. The "socket" on the machine is essentially a shrouded plug - if you look inside you'll probably see 2 pins and a metal strip running from side to side in between. What you want (I'm assuming here 'cos I don't know the machine in question) is a trailing, rewirable, female Schuko connector. B&Q don't sell them, but a good local electrical outlet should be able to get one for you. I think I got my last one (for my Jet PT) from Axminster - most of their larger stuff along with all Scheppach, Fox etc. machinery seems to have this type of connector.

Edit: Aha, found a picture at least. I suspect this is what you want (this is a better picture)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome Neil :)
I was actually a member here before, a few years ago. Then my partner & and I had a baby, and there didn't seem time for woodwork.
Anyway, things are looking up, I finally have my dream table saw - well, OK, not quite the dream saw, I had my heart set on a Sedgwick, but I need something mobile for now. The DW746 seems to be exactly what I need right now, and is definitely a good step up from the Sip cabinet saw I had for a short while. Much better quality in the important areas, and fundamentally a better engineering design.
The connector on the saw isn't the usual 16A type, I actually have a few of those on hand, its a very odd looking thing
Mark, I think you've hit the nail on the head, thankyou for going to so much trouble :)

Max,

Newbie question for you - its my first post to this group.

I'm considering buying a DW746 too and I was wondering how you were getting on with your Dewalt table saw. I'm not sure I can justify an Xcalibur and my shop is cramped so I'm thinking of going with a hybrid saw I can move if I have to.

Apart from any general feedback I had two questions really. I believe the side tables are sheet steel instead of cast iron. Are these in anyway flimsy? I note Dewalt sell a replacement cast iron side extension for this saw - wonder why they would sell these if the original side tables aren't a weakness.

Also, I hate to bring up the dreaded "D" word on my first post, but my dealer is telling me the DW746 will take the Freud Dado head. I'm aware of the debate around the use of the dado heads and have read many posts in this news group. So I was surprised to hear that this saw takes them. The Dewalt US website confirms the DW746 takes a dado but perhaps for HSE reasons the Dewalt UK site doesn't mention it. Or maybe Dewalt modified the arbour and my dealer is wrong. Have you any experience of fitting a Dado head to this saw?

Many thanks,

Pete

PeteH,

I got the DW746 about 3 years ago with the sliding table and the cast iron extension. The steel ones came with it still and although never fitted they are heavy and I would imagine they are ok in use.
Having said that the cast iron really does make for a great area of flatness and stability, and for the extra is well worth it.
The UK saw arbor is shorter than the US version and from my enquiries DeWalt UK will not supply the longer one.
Good luck with the decision making process - the hardest bit I always find.

Thanks, Neil for the welcome and SP for clarifiying the situation re Arbor length.

I kind of suspected Dewalt would adapt the saw for the UK market and wasn't very confident when the dealer told me it would take a dado head. Glad I asked the question - a successful first post!

Before I got my Delta unisaw, I had the jet supersaw which was fitted with a euro arbor and I swapped it very quickly and easily with the U.S. version to accept a dado. I dont see any reason why you couldn't order one from the U.S. and fit it. While i'm here as well, I have a brand new in the box 746 cast iron sliding table sat in the box doing nothing. I'll take £80 for it or any reasonable swap offers!

jonathan.
