has anyone installed their own dust extraction system using underground drainage pipe or similar? I need to get a system in place but don't want to spend a fortune.

I installed the above ground pipe as I did not want the below ground colour and the price was not much different at the retail level.
In the end it costs much more than you expect if you use Y junctions rather than T junctions for better flow of dust. You have to convert the 110mm soil pipe to 100mm at the ends to fit standard fittings. I bought 100mm French soil pipe the last time I was there and and make a junction at all ends of the pipe with blastgates

If you want more details PM me

felderman,

Try a search on the forum for Spirolux or dust extraction & you'll find information overload

Phil, You can get Spirolux metal dust extraction piping from http://www.cclveloduct.com/ I have this pipe work in my workshop, and IMHO it is the better way to go, and by using metal ducting you do not have to worry about earthing your system.

Cheers

Do they sell this in the French sheds? i.e Leroy Merlin, Calais ?

Mike this earthing problem with plastic is old wives tales. There is so much from the science side that says its not true.

Barry you may very well be right, and as usual in matters like this there are Yes and No camps, and to be perfectly honest I have no real idea whether or not there can be an earthing problem, so I play safe and take precations. And I still think that the metal piping is the way to go, and if you take this road cclveloduct is one of the cheapest on the market. For instance their 100mm piping is half the price that Axminster charge.

The main advantage of plastic it that you can change your mind and re design the pipe work with ease With metal that would have been more trouble. I got it wrong to many times - this or that did not work with the extraction attached. Re arranged my workshop 4 times on installing the pipe work. You can push fit with plastic soil pipe.
I am pleased that I chose soil pipe - might in the future consider metal if I go to 150mm pipe because of the cost.

Mike I use CCl and get a lgood discount from their price list but did not use their product as I wanted flexabliity. As I have now established my system and if I went to 150mm I would use CCl. Retail CCL prices are so much cheaper than Axminster.

I beg to differ. If I wanted to rearrange my system, it would be no problem what so ever. The push fit of soil pipes would be slightly faster but not so that it would make me want to fit a plastic system.

Again, there are yes and no camps, and I am quite sure that those that have fitted soil pipes are just as happy with there installation as the ones who have used metal.

This is a snap shot of some of my sh*T pipe

I fitted my system with underground soil pipe, and anywhere that needs to be converted from 110mm to 100mm or less I use the flexible rubber connectors that are usually used to join pipes of different sizes.
These mean you can fix a blast gate at the end of 110mm pipe without any worries concerning the fit or leakage.
No - they don't collapse if the system get bunged up! I have tried to make that happen and the best result is that the extractor tries to suck itself up the pipe! The rubber fittings don't move at all.
Cheers.

Mike I am sure that more people have had to fit soil pipe?? For what ever reason. Your pipe cannot be cut on our table saws or bandsaws can they???
We are woodworks not metal workers at heart?

Well I have used plastic pipe, take a look here its been in use for a couple of years. Its not earthed and is much grubbier now but it still works, its been modified a number of times and is due for another change round once I have finished resiting the machines.

MikeC Plastic has another advantage - all you have to use is a little fairy and the joint is done - no rivets and tape. ???

Dave I found the time taken to make a blastgate was not worth it - the plastic ones are less than £6.50. I make blastgates out of wood(MDF) if the diameter is greater than 100mm as the costs are far too high for me if you can buy one?
Barry

Barry,

I made those gates to reduce the size from the 110mm soil pipe down to 4" flexible, I have bought a few 4" plastic ones since then.

Dave I just made a reducer with an inch wide 110mm pipe with a piece cut out and that goes over the 100mm and fits inside the 110mm
