Hi guys

The new SCMS has 60mm outer/50mm inner diameter extraction outlet. Eventually I want this built into a proper enclosure with an extraction hood. But for the time being it's living on a movable cabinet, which I'm going to place the RSDE2 (like a camvac) into. It has a 100mm outlet. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect the two. A very quick search hasn't brought up any 60mm inner diameter fittings. I could use those heat shrink things, but I've heard negative comments towards them.

Any ideas ?

I was going to suggest those heat-shrink fittings, if you're content with connecting the hose directly to the saw (not that I've used them)... But, I think the best solution would be to enclose the back of the saw (you don't have any rails to worry about! :p) and perhaps run a 100mm connection in to that?

Well, it partly depends on how good the extraction is on the Hitachi saw, I think...

While most of the dust ends up going behind the saw, if you're trimming the end of a board, you'll also find dust escapes to the other side of the blade, where no form of extraction is going to catch it.

Oh, and if extraction on the saw isn't great, you could try adding one of those deflector/cowls that Steve made for his Bosch. They do make a difference. :)

yeh I know it's never going to be great from the hose. But until I'm in a better position to re-arrange the WS, I'm going to have to live with it for now. The Hitachi comes with that cowl thingy as standard, so it should at least be OK. I didn't have any extraction on the Bosch at all, so anything will be an improvement. I'd rather not use anything as permanent as those heat shrink things and I hear you have to get them very hot to activate them which ends up melting the inner pipe.

Maybe I should try turning something to fit? Doesn't sound like fund tho ;)

Hello Wizer

Have you got enough room to do something like this?

Push fits onto saw and 100mm flexible push fits onto the reducer.

TBH, it doesn't suck everything up but it's better than nothing.

OPJ

Are the details of Steve's cowl thing posted anywhere here? Can't find them by searching and it could be useful.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks Dave. That was what I was thinking. I think it's going to be the only way to get what I want.

Why-o-why don't they standardise these things?

Not exactly... It was published in British Woodworking a couple of years ago and I did attempt to copy it myself. This is the only photo I have (I no longer have this saw):

It's basically a small sheet of roofing membrane glued to the inside of the port directly behind the blade. It's flexible enough that it won't get caught on the wood or fence and it does seem to make some improvement, as far as deflecting dust towards the extractor or collection bag is concerned.

Also, this was Doug's idea:

Might also be worth browsing this thread. :)

I'd ask the same question with small bandsaw. The mod I made didn't require a lot of thought and it's made an unbelievable difference on both bandsaws I have owned (large and small).

Also, this was Doug's idea:
I can vouch for the effectiveness of DougB's extraction/cleaning regime, a few months ago I visited his workshop to buy couple of items, and all I can say is I hope the operating theatre's as clean when they're sewing my fingers back on
