How do 'you' draft proof your sliding patio doors?

We have a total length of 14.5 metres of sliding doors across the front of our house and if not proofed there's a nice draft comes through the underside of them! Several years back I had a thought (it does happen occasionally?) as to how to stop the gap, so to speak. I bought several lengths of the tubular grey foam pipe insulation for 25mm pipes. That was cut in 1/2 then 1/2 again giving me 1/4s (good at maths too) . The 1/4 lengths are the perfect fit to go in the gap in the rails of the outer rail doors, between the inner and outer rails. Then the inner rail doors, I cut some 1/4s in half again to give me some thin strips that drop nicely in the slot left inside the inner rail and the floor.

Job jobbed and at about 80 centimes a 1 metre length for the insulation tubes it has to be well worth thr few minutes, and centimes, to do the job!!

Good 'ere init

That sounds great Jonzjob, but I can't picture it exactly. I'm wondering if your doors are anything like ours?

Ours don't have much in the way of draughts (just as well right now!), they're double-glazed plastic/steel and when closed, seem to close up fine. But there is some heat loss..

Any chance of you posting a quick pic so I can see what your channel looks like please?

Our doors are floor to almost ceiling, double glazed and run on a rail at the bottom and there is a slight gap because of the runners and rail, like below. Not easy to get a good photo of now with all the c r a p in place, but if you insist

Not much of a draft, but enough to make a difference me-thinks??

Cor, not much snow there Jon! Thanks for the pic, but when you get the chance (when it warms up, there's no rush), I'd really appreciate a pic of the channel itself - between the sliding frame and the outside, with the door/s slid open, which is where I presume you've fitted those quarter pipe muffs?

NO rush, really (we're having minus 8 tonight and minus 4 forecast for tomorrow, same as today). I won't be doing anything for quite a few weeks yet.

TIA

Well, if it's snow you want here's a view from a few years back

It's only -2 with a chill facture of -4 at the mo, but it was -5 and chill -7 this morning!! At our tremendous high altitude of 150m what else can we expect?

I'll do what I can see about the rail photo, but don't hold yer breff init..

I worked in uPVC door and window fabrication for many years and all our strip seals were fitted at source
Personally I would be speaking to the guys at Stormguard or a similar company who specialises in such matters for some professional advice on how to do this job properly see what they have to say
