Is it possible to by pass the internal hard drive and download directly from the internet to a external hard drive?

The reason I want to do it this way is because the downloads are large files (5, 10 and 15gb's), and up until now when I have transferred them from the internal to the external drive and then deleted the data from the internal drive, according to the defrag, it is leaving the drive in a mess with bits and pieces of files all over the place which the defragmenter does not seem to be able to put right.

Thank you in advance.

Cheers

Its simple to do. When you are asked to designate the directory to which you wish to save the file, simply use the directory of choice on your external drive eg: g:\downloads or whatever. Clearly the drive needs to be connected.

I thought even if you designate a different drive, it downloaded to the temporary internet files and then copied it to the specified location.

Hi Tim, Thanks for the super fast reply.

Sorry, but it is a torrent I am using to download from and it does not ask for a designated directory, it just downloads directly to the hard drive.

Which Torrent client are you using. I think bitorrent allows you to specify a download directory somewhere in the settings.

I presume these 15Gb torrents are perfectley cosher

Hi Jim, you guys are certainly fast off the mark tonight.

Yes it is Bitlord I am using which I presume is same as Bitorrent. Have you any idea how I can alter the settings?

Yes all above board

Thanks for the quick reply.

Bitlord and Bittorrent are different programs. I have just downloaded Bitlord v.2 to have a look. If you open 'options' and then choose the folders tab, you can set both the completed download folder and the temporary folder for incomplete downloads. Set these to folders on your external drive and you should be ready to go.

Jim, I have got Bitlord 1.1 and it hasn't got a folders tab in options. I went to download v.2, but it says that it is a "beta" version and that it may be unstable. Is it still alright to use it? I hope so because it seems just what I need.

Once again thanks for the quick reply.

There can be issues when trying to connect to torrents with a beta version of a program - quite a few of the torrent sites won't allow access from beta versions of some programs because of stability issues.

Sorry can't help with the Bitlord problem as never used it.

Mike, there's only one way to find out. If you are worried about it being beta, the why don't you download Bittorrent. Its what I use and I've never had a problem with it. You can set the folders as well.

With the Bitlord program on your screen, press Ctrl+P at the same time.

A new window will pop up, in the left hand side of it click on 'Task'

The window on the right will change and you should then click 'Default Download Path:' which will also show where your files normally go to(it's not obvious that you can click on this but you can).
Clicking on this will make a small box appear at the side with three dots in it. Click on this and this and another window pops up called 'Browse for a Folder'. This will allow you to browse to where you want your files to go to, which will probably be near the top under 'My Computer' and called something like E: or F: drive.
Simply click on the drive you want, then 'OK' and this should then close this last window and will show the new destination for your files in the 'Default Download Path'.
Click 'OK' to close the Preferences window and you're all set to go... remembering of course that all your files will go to this folder now and you might need to change it back at some point.

Hope this helps!

Alternatively of course, when you click to download the torrent, a window pops up confirming that you want to do the download and at the top of it it asks you where you want to save it to, with a browse option at the side.
This way, you can specify the settings for each torrent as you go.

Thanks to one and all for sorting that little problem out, your a mind of information. =D> =D> I have learnt more about computers on this forum then I have ever learnt elsewhere.

Cheers
