Neither of us know this, this is an assumption that fits the general and popular tone of the thread. Granted it is likely this is the case but we don't actually know.
I know and read that the seller originally claimed to have bought the item for £550 as a book press. That claim was then deleted after complaints to eBay about the listing.

+1

So I think we can safely assume this guy is a chancer who was found out on this occasion.

They may have bought it for £500 as a book press - its another assumption that they didn't. After all, the drive of this thread was to stop someone else paying silly money for a book press that isn't a book press, its not beyond the realm of possibility that this was the case with the current seller in the first place.

I agree that this situation is likely to be mis selling but I'd seek further facts before taking action myself - that's all.

Assume? yes.
Safely? No.

To put your statement in context, you don't even know if it's a guy!

I think it is safe to say that the seller knew exactly what he (or she, seeing as you have a touch of pedant about you) was trying to sell in the first place judging by reported conversation and his/her attitude.

I think Vic's efforts in thwarting this seller's attempt to mis-sell are to be applauded.
It's a shame more people don't make that effort and help to make eBay a safer place to trade.

I wasn't trying to be pedantic, just pointing out the reality of a statement that safely assumed something when one of the three stated facts was very clearly unknown.

Have I insulted you? Was there a need to call me a pedant?

I have seen first hand when forums have righted Internet wrongs without having ANY facts and the real world implications it has, hence my approach to this thread. It's easy to assume and fix things from the comfort of a keyboard.

I did not intend this thread to become an argument or snagging off match. All I intended to do was make people aware. It is good that a few contacted the seller to obviously right a wrong and also advise ebay of the incorrect listing. It was changed and then relisted so no poor buyer will get totally ripped off. So can we please now end the *** for tat comments, as they serve no purpose what so ever.

Point taken riclepp

Bit taken aback regarding the responses I received to an honest comment. Yes, I know the listing was incorrect (I'm not stupid or un-savvy) but the assumptions everyone agreed in terms of why it was incorrect and the resulting backlash to my own comments were a tad worrying for me.

The reason I joined this forum was in part due to seeing so many keyboard warriors on other forums - I actually witnessed a business failure (not my own or this forum) when a thread suggested wrong doing and everyone jumped on for the ride. The forum colluded to right the wrongs without any facts and drove said business into the ground with a huge cheer when achieved. They absolutely hounded the guy and his family. When the facts came out, it transpired that none of the original 'facts' had any basis but no one stopped to ask at the time.

Lesson learnt here though, next time I'll just keep schtum :!:

This thread was well intended and achieved a satisfactory result in that what was clearly an outright con was thwarted on this occasion. The fact that shed9 wanted to take his corner is the reason for the conflict. However, he's promised to keep quiet now so alls well that ends well.

Why schtum ? everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and that's all you were doing. =D>
