I'm not actually sure if there is a preferred British name for these so apologies if I confuse anyone with the collection of names above.
I first saw these on the New Yankee Workshop when Norm used a router template to cut both the recess and the key itself and I'm tempted to try them myself, both to reinforce some spilt timber and for decorative purposes. I've had a quick Google and most of the references are American with Rockler seeming to supply the template, router bush & bit. Does anyone know if there is a UK supplier of these?
I know I could always cut the keys on a bandsaw and then use this as an outline for the recess but I'm thinking that accuracy would be more difficult as would getting a uniform depth on the recess. Does anyone actually do this without a template and are there issues with accuracy?
Thanks,

Glynne

Easy to do with hand tools no need for expensive bushes etc, a bit of practice on some scrap and away you go.
The depth isn't important as you can plane it down after fitting.

Knife, Chisel and mallet, router plane to level (the recess will be seen from the front).

And a shoulder plane to level it (its curved so a normal plane wouldn't work)

100% agree with the above and there is not much woodworking I tend to do by hand LOL

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have a play and see how it goes.

Pete,
I wasn't quite sure what you meant by

Harry,
That could just go on my Xmas & birthday list!

The handle curves downwards so I couldn't use a normal plane I needed one where the blade went right to the edge.
