Douglas Fir Price

Can anyone advise on a target price (£/ft³ or m³) for kiln dried Douglas Fir, 50mm thickness. Looking to make some windows and no idea what price I should be expecting when I ring the local timber merchants.

Aye, I found that website and found oak is the same price as doug fir :shock:, which seemed doubtful to me.

I tend to buy timber on quality rather than price, but recently I've made a couple of Douglas Fir furniture pieces and was delighted to find superb, straight grained timber available for £40 per cubic foot, this compares with the £60-65 I'll happily pay for really good quality Oak.

How about Sapele for your windows? More durable than home grown DF. Last load I bought was £27 per cu ft (£960 / m3) although that was quite a big quantity (£700ish). In any case that might be a useful price reference for you.

Just made doors and windows from Doug fir. Got it from timber source near frome who deliver nationwide. Think it was about £800 square metre from memory. Good quality and machined a dream. Takes paint well

Thanks folks that gives me a couple of great price points and an alternate to ask about if the DF is expensive or not available! I never quite know what I'll find when I ask a question to a supplier in Aberdeen, I've found gold for pennies and vice versa, it is an odd place at times.

Have you tried Rembrand in Inverurie? I checked out DF with them a couple of years back and they seemed reasonable.

One other long shot might be Tarryblake sawmill over by Huntly. Anything he saws comes off the estate, so it's a bit pot luck, but I got some larch planks recently which were pretty good. There is a similar chap up Deeside near the Deeside Activity centre, but last time I was there he'd had a really bad quadbike accident, so may not be active. Occasionally, Garioch Plant Hire have DF, but sizes are random.

I'd say Custard's £40.00 is about right for fairness. George Sykes Timber lists it as medium price which, when I bought some Southern Yellow Pine from them, was around £35.00 a cubic foot. Jimminy! I think it should be dry enough to use by now!

I have been down there a few times to get some decent hardwood for furniture because I struggle to find anything decent in Aberdeen.
