Have I got it right that you want the panel to open 180 degrees and cantilever out so that, when open ,it rests in front of the drawer?

Or are you happy to have it projecting out at 90 degrees as per Tim's hinge?

Not 180 Keith, just 90 as the one in Tims pic. I've already got some nice brass slide stops for that.

I do have similar ones with round rebate on both sides, here is a pic

These are from Isaac Lord

But on this project with the door closed you would see the edge of the hinge. :(

And you would have same problem with the door not opening properly with the current dims.

You shouldn't do, unless you cut all the way through the panel. I've used similar for drop down panels and you can't see the hinge at all when the flap is closed.

Thats correct Jake I made a joint up from scrap, this type of hinge means the door would foul the top of the draw.

It does seem I will have to use those rubbish double crank from Skrewfix unless someone comes up with a supplier of nice heavy brass ones. :(

The Screwfix hinges will let the panel open 180 degrees, you would have to rely solely on stays to keep it level.

You could use a counter flap hinge

Or, thinking laterally, you could hinge the top panel off the top edge of the drawer.

I definitely wouldn't use the Screwfix hinges, anything would be better than that

Or, you have to increase the gap so it is a bit more than the thickness of the door, with any radius or chamfer helping to reduce the 'bit more'.

Might it be possible, if you increase the thickness of the shelf a bit (even just a thicker lip at the front?), to hinge off the top of the front edge of the shelf and use single-cranked hinges like this woodfit neuform hinges?

Not quite as secure in terms of fixings, but the stays are bearing the weight of the open flap door, presumably.

I know your arrangement is slightly different, but taking a slightly different approach, could you do something like this:

seen better in the technical drawing here:

giving a drop-down flap with no obvious fixings when closed:

Images are from Franz Karg's fantastic book 'Solid-Wood Cabinet Construction'

Yes I've come to that conclusion Jake, I think I'll alter all the dimensions so I can have at least a 3/4" gap all around the door and the draw front. I think it's the easyest approach. After spending soooo much money for that American black walnut it won't be ruined by cheap hinges. :?

On the upside, it'll keep the hinges off the front face of the flap door, which would detract from the ultra-clean lines, no matter how posh the double-cranked hinges.

Your problem intreaged me. Doing a google for double-cranked hinge found a few although many look similar to the screwfix item.

I did spot this which sounds like it could be better quality:

http://www.hinges.co.uk/families.ASP?section=A19 and look at item 1387 at the bottom.

It may be worth working through the google results incase you find one you like the look of.
