Tap in a sliver of pine dipped in glue, I have the impression that matchwood is very lightweight stuff. You might also want to think about a packet of Hinge-Tite screws from Screwfix, nice beefy thread and a head designed to fit into the hinge. This has always worked for me and is a permanent fix, the screws Ive only used once but thought they were very good. I wouldnt dream of fitting dowels and the like,,a potential nightmare,,,but each to their own I suppose,,

I've heard that stuffing the hole with cotton wool then soaking it with superglue is effective, but I've never tred it. Any opinions?

Les
Yeah that works, but also matchsticks or bamboo kebab skewers, anything with bulk, the superglue just cuts down on working time especially with an activator. Super thin CA will soak into the "wood" and strengthen it too. Flush it up with a sharp chisel. You may need to re-drill a pilot hole.
