As I said earlier, a big thick comfy cushion would be needed if this were sat on for any length of time. Even then, I reckon the straight back would be very uncomfortable.
Visually stunning though - Rob

Hi

To those commenting about comfort I must repeat my previous statement:

The customer spec for this job was that she wanted a hall chair with a Frank Lloyd Wright/Mackintosh influence. My design was more Mackintosh while my collegues was more FLR. The customer blended the two. As we all know chairs do not always have to be comfortable! In this situation it will only be sat on occasionally, the aesthetic considerations took prcedence over comfort.

As this chair was to be positioned in a hall, space was a consideration so the straight back meant it would sit against the wall. Being in a hall it would only be sat on occasionally so the aesthetics were the main consideration. In those terms form followed function and I would say the design was successful. As I said, chairs do not always need to be comfortable. I think a cushion on it would tend to spoil it aesthetically!

Having said that I wouild never propose this design for a dining chair.

The customer saw it this weekend and was pleased with it.

This is some classy piece with some nice lines and fine detail. Well done indeed.

Don't worry about the confort issue, it is so nice that people will just look and not sit!

Very nice. Very classy. Original. Probably not very comfortable. But....

Not all chairs have to be comfortable, only those intended to be sat upon :D

Really. There are some chairs whose main purpose is to enthrall. Like a throne, for example. And Mackintosh designed some chairs deliberately to be uncomfortable (the tea-room lady - Miss Cranston, was it) - had some squat square chairs made for her staff so that they would not want to spend too long sitting down).

As a one-off, say as a hall chair next to the phone, I can see that as being a great success.

Cheers
Steve
