Stef, sorry my description doesn't quite gel with yours. Now I'm not good with sketchup but I'll try to get a quick sketch onto the site. I was thinking more along the lines of a traditional dovetail 'tail' on the underside and a traditional 'pin' on the top of the leg and brace. I hope that is more clear but I'll have ago at a sketch.

ah, no, it's clear. its me that got the tail and pin mixed up.. i also meant a dovetail on the top (the V) and a pin at the top of the leg.

A quick sketch, I hope my description is somewhat more clear with this.

The top of the leg/brace is inserted into the pocket and then moved into the dovetail slot. Sorry about the sketch. If anyone thinks it worth doing a 'Sketchup' version might be easier to see.

p.s. Of course the pocket does not go through the top to the upperside

yes, that's more or less what i understood.
my problem would be to get the angle of the pin perfect to get a tight fit.
but other than that, neat idea.

The more i think about it, the more i think i will go for a wedge through tenon. which is in a way, what my original idea was (a bit). the cap was acting as a comb of wedges which should compress the join. of course, i can make it simpler, as it was suggested, by dropping the cap.
