Yet another relatively new member to the forum asking - again - about 'Is X better than Y' or 'Is the price-premium on products from this company worth it'?

What is wrong with USING THE SEARCH button, people?

And if you don't like the forum search function then use Google.

Or if you want to know the difference between saw X from saw Y from the same company then don't be a lazy sod. Go look up the details on the company website first. Then if you don't understand something come back and explain your confusion.

As a newbie you aren't always aware of what you should be looking at and what you should be comparing.

As for the search issue, that presupposes that there has been no new information or no new members with a different point of view.

It was only when I saw Norm that I rekindled my interest in woodworking. I saw loads of new types of (power) tools that I'd never heard of and knew nothing about. I didn't have a clue about any of this and had no idea of what to google. So as a 'newbie' having found suitable forums I could at least ask questions that individuals could answer - the same questions I couldn't phrase to get usable answers from Google.

It is still difficult to get dispassionate advice and rewiews on most matters - most of the time it is just sales gumph and offers. The real life feedback from others is invaluable.

Also searching on the forum is often not straightforward - many's the time I vaguely recollect reading a thread, but tracking it down can be a right PITA.

Remember we are all learning - and the sure way to discourage somebody with a fledgling interest is to tell them to 'go away' and find out for themselves.

If you are not interested in a topic or do not want to answer it then don't read it or take part, but do not disparage or discourage - you never know if the asker may be able to answer your burning question next week.

It's usually the case that this forum is helpful and not in to flaming question askers and that's the way I'd like it to remain.

I agree with Roger, there is a good deal of lazyness on the part of many posters.
There is so much info out there in t'internet land, of which UKWS is a part. Doing a bit of research isn't that difficult, even for a complete novice.
To see the same question asked again and again does get annoying, especially when they appear on the same page of the forum.
Surely it can't be that hard to have a quick scan of the most recent threads to see if your question has already been answered.

I'm with Roger and Studders on this one in that it is extremely easy to get masses of information from the internet on any product, service or subject.
The secret is in deciphering it :?

I use this facility regularly in the course of my business and it's so much easier than the old days of books and telephone.

Personally, I prefer to research first then ask when I'm stuck as I don't want to look even more of an idiot than normal :lol:

Newbies should never be discouraged but I think it's definately down to laziness and EVERY forum you look at has the same problem and repeated posts of "use the search button please".

e.g. Just seen a post (won't say what) so I googled the question - result - loads of info and instructions including videos and utube. Took me 30 seconds. Surely better to do that first then ask for specific tips and advice afterwards?

I have moved it to it's proper forum. But seeing as he joined in 2006 I would not call him a newbie.

Not quite the same thing. He has done some research and is asking for opinions from those who've used the specific makes/models.

My point being it's all very well to sit with your pointy stick and poke the newbies but it's not really necessary is it? If it does annoy you so much why not do something about it rather than set up a thread to moan?

This place is generally pretty friendly so if there are a few people posting for information that has been asked for before is it really a problem?

What utter rubbish. You don't have to read or respond to anything if you don't want to.
For every one "stupid" question you can be sure that there are more people out there who also want to hear the answer, but were too shy to ask.
Newbies reading this - don't be put off. Ignore RogerS, who in any case won't know the answer to every question anyway!

If the question interests me and I know the answer I will try to help or link to a previous thread that has an answer, if the question interests me and I don't know the answer I will research it myself anyway and post what I find. If I am not interested then I won't. Choice is mine. What is the point of a forum where the members just tell you to eff off if you ask a question?

Today I saw a man in town on two sticks, both legs were deformed and his progress was slow. But how I admired that man!
I commented earlier that I had joined a M/C forum and reported some of the questions asked, many of which would seem to be curable by common sense.
People will pay thousands for their machine but won't cough up a few quid for some spanners and a Haines, and yes some of them do seem to want waiting on IMO.
