Hi,

I spotted this on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :RTQ:UK:11
and as it was for charity I informed them it was a Stanley No1, it had 9 bids and was up to about £60 so they weren't letting on what it was. I had and email from Tools for self reliance to say they are going to get it looked at and auctioned else where. Only thing is I might have upset some people, but I can live with that.

Pete

I see it has ended now, I dont know how someone could live with buying a tool from an un suspecting charity for such a cheap price and still feel good about them selves!

I don't think anyone did buy it... "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing." - I figure they're going to re-list it as a No.1

I came across one of Steve Maskery's YouTube videos about woodworkers in Sierra Leone last week. It showed a guy making furniture using a collection of donated old tools. It did occur to me that somewhere out there there may be someone earning a pittance making furniture using a plane that is worth several years salary - if only he knew it.

Well done Pete - you'd have thought more people would have a conscience

Only two things to do when you'll spot something like that, either place a bid of at least £300 or repond like you did. Well done!

'tis quite possible but I think that usually charities that specialise in sending tools overseas have people who do know something about hand tools and pick out the rare ones to sell at auction. The big problem for a lot of these charities is not getting the tools it is paying for the shipping and so being able to get 300 - 400 quid for a plane is a right result! I think it is around 2 - 3 grand to send a 20' container here to Africa.

So well done Pete you've been very helpful!

I'll stick my neck out once again and say if anyone is having a clear out and has any usable tools, why not get in touch with Tools with a mission. They are revamping their site at the moment but usually they give a list of the kind of stuff that they are interested in and they have collectors - maybe that is the wrong term on this forum  - in most parts of the country.

Cheers,

Steve

(Just so you know; I don't stand to gain anything by mentioning TWAM - other than the satisfaction of knowing that someone over here might benefit - we aren't all 419 scammers in West Africa you know! )

Good on you Pete.

As a matter of interest does anyone want to speculate how much its worth? I don't pretend to understand these things.

I *thought* TFSR sold collectible tools at Tony Murland's auctions. Certainly "a charity" does, and I though ti was that one.

So I think (as you propose) someone is checking for collectibles, and missed this one - a bad mistake IMHO.

Good for you, Pete.

I used to live very close to the TFSR HQ at Netley Marsh near Southampton. They are a very practical and worthy organisation. When they load a container with tools for Africa, they use every cubic centimetre. They, and other tool-related charities, deserve our support. I can relate much more easily to the very down-to-earth aid they provide than the megabucks of international aid.

Regards.
