I was planning on buying a belt/ disc sander for around £100. Having done a bit of research i'm kind of thinking maybe not bother with the belt and just get a bigger disc sander?

What do you guys think? I already have a 4" makita hand held belt sander and so don't think a cheap belt sander would be progress.

Looking at them the axminster 12" one looks ok at £120 but I'm wondering if the fox double disc one at £99 is a better buy? I don't want to buy complete rubbish so anyone got the fox?

There was a thread recently on this subject and i think it was said that unless your going to get a floor model they aren't worth it. What are you going to be using it for?

I bought the little Record one recently, I find it's a great help, and use it a lot,

Cheers

Jed

I have the fox double and its fine no problems and runs true but its quite large so uses up bench or 'mobile' space .

I too have the 12" Axminster one and am quite happy with it. It runs true whereas some I looked at did appear to have some runout.

Mine's mounted on a simple birch ply box type base containing a cheap Earlex vacuum. The vacuum and sander are wired to the same switch. The base is on castors and it moves aroundto where I am working or gets pushed into a corner when not needed.

No experience of the Fox one I'm afraid.

I'm not short of space and I'm ok with a welder for making frames etc (live on a farm).

Just remind me why the 12" disc is better than a 6" disc and a 4" belt again?!

And could I upgrade to belt only in the future or will I miss the belt bit?

I thought about the belt/disc sander combo at one time, but I know the belt sander wouldn't get used. A big disc sander for me would be far more useful - Rob

Yep, definitely go for a 12in disc sander! I briefly owned one of the Axminster ones and it wasn't bad at all.

I also once had a belt and disc sander - the 6in disc was too small for many jobs and the motor was noisy and underpowered, meaning it was easy to stall the belt (which I never found very good for accuracy, either).

Just bought a rexon twin disc sander off ebay.

seems like a pretty good piece of kit. Plenty of weight and more motor than a belt/disc combo

thanks
