I'm making an ash dining table to match the customers existing set of Windsor chairs.

I contacted the maker of the chairs to see what finish he used as I have to match it for the table, he told me he uses a shellac sanding sealer followed by 'rustic pine' briwax wax. This gives a great looking finish but obviously won't be nearly tough enough for a dining table top..

Can anyone help with suggestions as to what I might use that's tough but still allows me to use the coloured wax?!

I'm struggling here so any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

I am sure you can put wax over hardwax oil, and the latter is resistant to stains, depending on the make. I have no idea how tough it is compared to polyurethane, for example. Hardwax is expensive but you can get small sample cans from some makers e.g. Fiddes. That way you could do your own tests for a modest outlay.
