Hello gentlemen as the title suggests I would. Hope that we could. Show what we are working. On even if it's a little bit off the wall. I opened. This thread because. I started to hijack another. As in that I posted. Pics of what. I get up to if requested I will do so again here. I don't want my ego rubbed so I will share how I do make the scales and the finish used. No big thing really the finish is ca lots of coats. 10 or more then a polish. No scroll saw just a coping saw and a belt sander then hand sand.

Post here by all means ! Just looked at the hijack thread you were talking about - your razors look stunning !! I'd be interested to here a little about how you make them ;)

Err well if it's ok here is one I did earlier lolas you can see the custom scales are in two halves I made them for a particular. Razor but when I assembled them it just didn't FEEL right in my hand so I set them aside for a future razor that I have yet to find lol I first start by finding out If the razor will take a bevel. If so the hard work begins.
1 disassemble the razor
2 decide how far I'm going to take it, up to mirror or satin finish.
3 very precise hand sanding with wet n dry. A bad one goes 80g 120g 240g 320g 400g 600g 800g 1200g 2000g but the last two I sometimes pass in favour. Of a sisal mop with a fast cutting compound then a polish with a stitched mop with a fine compound. Then the same compound on an unstitched mop. Bobs your uncle a shiny blade
Step 2 the scales. take the blade this is one I'm currently on draw around
It noting the position of the pivot point then over the top of that out line draw the scale design. Allowing enough room for the wedge. Err wedge yep a wedge I'll get to that.in the next post I need to we'll guess lol

Ok back to the scales for a razor you need to prevent the blade from slipping straight through the scales. Don't want to lose any appendages do we. So a wedge is used. And it is a proper wedge at the thick end smaller than the thickest part of the blade or (spine) the thickness depends how deep you want the blade to sit in the scales. The wedge can be of any material you want. Bone, brass, acrilic. Or the same wood that the scales are made from the angle of the wedge. Is an area of controversy but a rule of thumb. Is where the tang of the blade is this is where the pivot point is when viewing from above has a taper so I male mine to mirror ths natural angle. Obsessive, yes, necessary no, its just what I do apply. You coating. Ca in my case tru oil. Epoxy. Whatever you like however. Shellac for me is a no no as is shows water marks. Basically. That's it
On ye the assembly 1/16 brass rod or nickel silver with washers inside and out on the pivot end and out side on the wedge end. I think that it. Errr nope. Hone the blade up to about 12000g. Strop and test shave.

Started my second ever turning project. This morning. No prizes for guessing it's another shaving brush. A commission non the less. I chose cocobola and I'm gonna be a bit ambitious and inlay a turquoise ring, well inlace small pieces I hope that it is as beautiful when it's finished as it is in my head lol.

Do you buy the razor then then alter the handle ? The end thing looks sleek and refined, I'm just curious on the bit in between ;)

The blade is vintage. The original scales (handle) was celluloid. Very badly cracked so I removed the scales and designed a complete new set from scratch. In the restoration word it is desirable to keep the razor as original as possible. However in this case it just wasn't possible so I elected to do a custom job.

Well chaps the second brush is done the wood is cocobola the inlay isn't as perfect as I'd like it but Im always self critical.

looks good.

where are you buying your bristles from?
only ask as I want to rebristle an old brush but dont want to go smashing up a new one just for a bit of fluff. :D

You cheat lol you buy the entire knot you need to find out what size the hole in your handle is for instance you can get knots in 18, 22,25 even up to 35 mm I get mine either from the golden nib or the turners workshop to be fair I only buy best badger or silver tip. The latter being the best possible.

There's a couple of badgers that come into my garden most nights.
If I shoot them how much will you give me for the pelts?
