Sounds like you got a poor tutor. The best way to learn any instrument is always going to be a one on one tutor, providing that tutor is a very good teacher and is fully aware of all the technical issues and pitfalls. That doesn't always equate to being a good player, some players are incredibly proficient but make poor teachers.

Aye, that I did, he was terrible. There aren't any good teachers within my area, so thats why i decided to look at alternatives, and a good DVD and Video lesson IMO is almost as good. The one's on Jamplay for example have many features which are better than a tutor, in that it's recorded so you can pause, rewind and watch over and over. They also mention a lot about practise techniques, correct posture (so you can correct yourself) and so far I've learnt more through that and a number of books/dvd's that I've got, that I can't see a personal tutor offering the same level of tuition for the money or time.
