asthe title suggets, am i better buying a daimond type dresser for my grinder ( Record Power RPBG6 Bench Grinder 6-inch
) or a star whell dresser ?
which is better ?
i will be buying one very soon so any assistance greatly appreciated 8)

A Star wheel dresser is far too course for a white oxide wheel intended for turning tool use.

Make sure if you are using a diamond dresser that you have some means of maitaining the flat profile of the wheel, simply doing it by hand can easily end with the wheel no longer being flat.

Morning Rob

I spoke to one of the Record staff at a show about this. I was having problems with wheel balance on my grinder.

He recommended something like this ...

commonly known as a devil stone.

It's no good pushing it into the face of the wheel, 'cos it will just follow the shape of the wheel.

The trick is to be to push a sharp corner of it across the grinding face i.e parallel to the wheel axis. It works for me. Don't forget eye and lung protection when you do it.

TBH the supplied wheels aren't particularly good, but you get what you pay for.

When you need to replace it, I'd recommend something better.

Have a look at ...

I bought a pink wheel from him and it is much better. Once trued up, it just needs the occasional clean.

HTH

Cheers

Dave

I can recommend one of these to ensure you quickly get a nice flat and even surface on the wheel.

Just got back from an abrasive wheels course.

Diamond dressers/devil stones and star dressers are different tools designed to achieve different ends.

The diamond/devil stone is to shape the wheel, typically for a woodworker this is to true it up.

A star wheel dresser is used to remove glazing/blunt grit and restore the wheel to its free cutting properties. This was more important with older style carborundem stones that had a very strong bond, modern stones tend to be more friable. A wheel is sharpened by the old blunt grit breaking away exposing new sharp particles. If this does not happen naturally you need a star wheel to sharpen it.

Hope this helps

As Chas stated above a star wheel dresser is too coarse for the type of grinding wheels that are suitable for shapening HSS turning tools. Use a diamond dresser for the white/pink/blue wheels and keep the star dresser for the old coarse grey stones.
