I've recently been gettinh into decorating my turned boxes - what do people think?

Sycamore, pyrographed & coloured.

Red Oak, pyrographed, coloured and gilt cream (the word on the box is derwen, btw - which is oak in welsh).

And finally, one in Jarrah with burr inlay & gilt cream - unfortuantely this one broke in half as I was fininishing it, and had to be glued back together - which mean recutting the mis-aligned flange & refinishing - so the lid is a much sloppier fit than I would have liked.

Hiya,

First two are for me too !

What did you use to colour ? - did you then seal with something ?

All seem very nicely done! I like the colourful ones the best too, I think they are particularly well done. I guess its all personal tastes as usual, but these do it for me. Well done!

These are really cool as they say. I sell small boxes as tooth fairy boxes and I can imagine the colorful ones doing well as such. Like the pyro'e outlines. Gives it a jigsaw effect on the first in particular

The colouring is done with a mixture of Letraset permanent markers and home made spirit stains.

I wasn't sure about the really bright ones, but your comments re-assure me! I did them because I thought the sycamore looked very bland as it was.

Forgot to mention, they are all finished with 2-3 coats of osmo oil, the buffed and given a couple of coats of Renaissance wax. The oil doesn't dissolve the colours as much as other finishes - but you do have to apply the first coat very carefully.

Excellent creations as far as I'm concerned, well defined detail showcases the finesse of turning and subsequent finishing, the vibrant colour contrasts work well with the fine demarcation lines containing and yet enhancing them.

Looks like you have a far steadier hand than me with that fine lining.

Those look great Mage :D
Think the acorn and leaf would've looked better if they were in line with each other :?:

What the photos don't show is that there are three acorns around the lid. At least you thought they were acorns - after I'd done them I thought they looked too much like strawberries!

Great work,

the colours are great and the effects are very attractive. I look forward to the next offerings.

Fantastic, Kym ....
my favourite is 'Derwen' , there's something rather 'celtic' about it.. like it could hold a Welsh Dragon's egg !
The Jarrah's a close second for me... but in saying that, they're ALL great.

Diolch !

8) 8)
