Hello all

I'm fairly new to the world of hand planes but I love using them and want to make sure I get the most out of the ones I've got and any I get in the future.

I'd like to know more about setting them up, blade cambers, which planes are best suited for which jobs etc.

There must be a really good book which I can read to get up to speed.

Anyone got some suggestions?

Cheers, Andrew

I wouldn't look any further than David Charlesworth's books (all of them)

DC's books only cover a limited number of planes - they are good, and cover a lot of useful info, but i'd read Garratt Hacks Handplane book first. Then the DC books.

Cheers

I understand Chris Schwartz's new book is good, although I've not seen it

Like Shrubby said, Garrett Hack's book not only describes the techniques clearly, it also shows you colour pictures of all the many and varied types you will realise that you really really need.

And the old Planecraft that Record Tools published in the 50s as a catalogue/encouragement to buy one of everything is good too. (Widely available secondhand.)

Hi.

I have all the books quoted, except DC and Record's book.

They're all good.

Hacks' book is a huge source, with explanations, pictures and photos of all sort of planes. Plus it has some nice explanations about historical facts.

Working with handplanes from tauton only covers some planes. But it also shows how to use them, which is not too much covered in Hack's book.

Schwarz's book is the one IMHO that covers/give the more tips and tricks about how to use handplanes. Although it does not covers as many types as Hack's one.

If I had to buy again, I would say:

1 - Garret Hack,
2- Schwarz.

I hope it helps.
