hello all, i bought a large board of elm several years ago, its very dry and very nicely figured in places. i was asked to turn a tazza by my mother in law  and although i disagree with the dimensions she insisted on- heres a problem i had and overcome whilist making the bowl section.
heres the block mounted on a faceplate its 9" by 9" by 3 1/2"
knocked into the round
heres the torn end grain
the bowl starting to take shape
here is the problem even with a razor sharp gouge its still not going away!!
so i soak the problem grain in lemon oil which is the finish i'm going to be using them make another pass with the razor sharp gouge, here is teh result -better but still not completley gone.
heres the fine shavings and my main 5/8" gouge
some power sanding and oil later
heres the finished piece, its not to my taste but it is to the spec i was given
