Thicknessing some larch yesterday (not taking more tha 2mm off each time) and the Jet 12" Thicknesser just died. Assumed it was the overload trip (just by the switch) but even leaving it for 24 hours, the trip doesn't reset. In fact, it feels as if there is nothing under the trip in contact with the button.
Before taking drastic action, does anyone know anything about these? it's a 2006 build WTS 12; is there a repair manual anywhere?

(oh, yes, before anyone suggests, no, it's not the fuse!)

No doubt if Bob 9fingers was around, he'd say scrap it because it's a brush motor, but that would be a waste :(

I dont think Bob would say scrap it from all the help I've seen him give over the years. In fact I'm pretty sure he did a thread on his thicknesser which was a portable brush motored type. Your best bet would be to PM him so he gets an email notification, or post your question over on the Haven where he is more active
Sorry I cant help myself

Hi Dickm I'm no expert but could it be the Brushes? My mrs was about to throw out a dyson Hoover that was dead and it had died very sudden and that was the brushes just got to be worth a try.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions - obviously, will need to take the beast apart to see what is the matter, but hoped someone might diagnose remotely. With regard to Bob, I seem to remember him describing brush motors as "the invention of the devil" :D . So I'll offer him a long spoon and see what he has to say.

The switch on my thicknesser became full of sawdust and stopped working, worth a look.

Possible causes:
1) No power to machine or lost neutral
2) Dust in NVR etc
3) Loose/damaged wire/s,
4) worn brushes
5) faulty capacitor
6) safety switch activated/broken
7) faulty motor & or other component

..you need to check cap & test if power is getting to the motor/brushes to start with... IMHO

Just to update on this, and record thanks for unbelievable service.
I emailed Bob Minchin, and he gave various suggestions, but recommended speaking to Nick Brown of Brimarc, who I think posts on here as Jetman. Did that this morning (which is probably Christmas Eve for those outside the big retailers). Got a reply within the hour, saying most likely the switch. Took it out and did some tests, which tended to confirm that the NVR was not pulling in. Confirmed to Nick, and at about 4pm got a mail saying that if he got my address immediately, he'd post a switch out today, payment if it worked and when he could find the price.
Now that IS service :D .

As it happens, by then some more tests suggested it was probably dust or similar in the switch; unfortunately have done my back in so can't move the compressor to blow it out :( . Likewise can't lift stuff on to the thicknesser, so it will have to wait anyway.

But has to be worth recording Nick's efficiency and kindness.

And now the story ends - I tried to repair the switch, but it was beyond redemption, so emailed Nick Brown to ask for a replacement. Apparently, he didn't get back into the office until yesterday, and was very apologetic about this on email. I forgot to send him my address until last night, but someone in Axminster had worked out my location from my email address, and the switch arrived in the post today. Planer now appears to be fully functional.

That is Service, with a capital S.
Well done Jet/Brimarc/Axminster.
