I have an older Hegner and after not using form a week or so found it totally dead. As an electrical ignoramus I am loathe to start taking it apart but have been told that it is probably the capacitor? If so any hgelpful advice would be welcome.

Do you not have an electrical place close by that can test the capacitor for you?
Easy to remove and replace.

OK. Sorted. Gave it a really good clean out, several decades of dust inside. I was given it several years ago and don't think it had been cleaned out prior to that. Seems to be running well again. Sorry to have been a nuisance

Sorry to be a bit late and I see that it is working now, Just wanted to say for future reference that if you take the tension off the blade or get the motor to run by hand when switched on then it does indicate a faulty capacitor, without going all technical the capacitor is just needed to get the motor running.
