Hi, I have the Sip 10 inch table saw,the 3hp one. I've been toying with idea lately of getting a dado set for it, my local shop here in Dublin tells me they are illigal in europe and can't be got. I spied this on the web ,Oshlun 8" stack dado set, * Two 8" x 42 tooth x 5/8" arbor outside saws with 1/8" thick kerfs.
* Six 5-tooth full-body chippers (four 1/8", one 1/16" and one 3/32").
* Eight brass shims.
* Dado range is 1/8" to 3/4".
* Maximum RPM 5500.
seems like a good price at $89,unfortunatly I can't find any info on whether it would fit my saw. Does anyone know if table saw arbours are generic, I mean basically the same size in the states as here. I understand the legality issues concern the brakes required in euro saws,would the brake on my sip affect the use of the dado blade? Thanks for any help,first time poster,I've been lurking for a while though. Excellent forum.

Dub, use the search facility for "dados" that will keep you busy for a couple of hours, then come back and ask the same question, if you dare.
regards,
Rich.

Dub, most people reckon it is a lot safer to use a router table. Actually I have found it very fast and easy to rout housings (dados) and rebates using a router table in the tablesaw instead of 1 of the extensions. This gives you loads of working surface and you can still use the rip fence.

If you go for a Triton you can change the bit and adjust the height above the table

Neat idea John !

How did you go about fastening the router table top in place ? Did you use the front and back rails to hold it ?

Thanks, Paul :D

Thanks for the replies, good to know it would have been a waste of money.
John,your router setup looks excellent. I assume the saws fence doubles as the routers,do you have plans for it you could share?One of the reasons I don't use my router table for dado's is because the fence out of the box was crap, the router slot is way too big and the holding/adjustment setup is unusable. Your setup has me thinking now. Cheers :)

Dub/Chisel, I nicked the idea off Jhalfa, if you do a search you should be able to find his thread. The CI extension bolts to the table and both rails with M8 bolts. So I trapped bolts through the oak lippings when I built the router table. It is actually rock solid. I have not built a proper fence yet but the idea is to use the tablesaws fence with a wooden box fence attached to it. If you make a hollow box you can use it for extraction by embedding a pipe in 1 end to suit your extractor. Sorry I don't have any plans for it.
Cheers

i have the sip 10inch saw u mentioned, and fitted a dado set, its not as straight forward as u might think a 4mm spacer is required and bush reducers, then u can only go up to 12mm. I think the dado is a great tool if used for the right job, for rough tennons, notches (e.g cross laps), rough grooves then its fine, but as we are lad to believe by a certain tv program they are not really suitable for fine tennons and grooves, for which i ALWAYS use my router table, i have a woodpecker quick lift and the adjustments are fantastic, i can get alot better fitting joints straight from the router than i can from the dado. I'm glad i have a dado if i need it, but prefer the router table, its safer too.

My original reason for wanting the dado was to cut housings at 10 degrees for a little box I'm making. It was time consuming nibbling away with a standard blade. I haven't figured out how to cut them with a router. Might be an idea for any budding inventers out there,an adjustable router for cutting at angles.

Hi Dub, once again, use the search facility and type in "Niki's jigs" I'll eat my hat if there's not something there to help you, he is a genius at inventing jigs to make life easy, he has got one going on the forum at the moment.
regards,Rich

Or have a word with Philly and see if he could make you a suitable plane, and I'm sure he could, that would trench them out by hand at the required angle quickly, quietly and easily and at suprisingly modest prices !!!

Cheers, Paul :D
