Cyclone lid seperator

Does any one know where I can purchase a cyclone lid separator for my dust/chip extraction system, or has anyone made one?

I have had one on back order from Rutlands for about 6-7 weeks, only to be told today they are now no longer made by Dakota so they won't be getting any more stock. Cheers Rutlands.

Having said that they don't look to difficult to make from the existing bin lid and a couple of rain water pipe elbow fittings. Just wondered how I would be able to fix the elbows to the lid permanently without them falling through or breaking off.

Camvac make them so presumably any camvac stockest. Try Yandles.

Get some 18mm ply, and route a round section to cover your bin. You can use drainpipe to make the in and out connections, you can glue up a double thickness to help glue the pipes in place.

I did have a link to one based around a dustbin with a top and two 90 degree waste pipe elbow - very similar to what Peter described but with an extra baffle plate situated just below the elbow exits.

I have one from Lee Valley/Veritas. It works well--but you can probably make your own cheaper.

I looked at the cyclone built by the guy on Lumberjocks, it looks fairly straighforward to build. This one I understand is for a vacum cleaner??

I have a 2HP Axminster dust/chip collector and was lookig for the dustbin lid style that could be added to a normal dust bin.

I should imagine one could be built for collecting the waste for the whole workshop but think it would have to be quite big.

This may be a project for the future but I need something that could be bought or made quickly. I'll check out camvac too, I have one of there collectors anyway.

I built a Thien Separator for use with my Camvac. I use it to collect sanding dust, chips and shavings from turning. It works well and pretty much no chips or shavings get through to the Camvac.
Fairly easy to make - I used my lathe for the circular parts.

Unless mixed something the Thien is different as it has a level below the lid to help stop debris getting sucked to the extractor.

I don't for a second doubt that the Thein version works but the comparatively small gap between the baffle and the edge of the bucket could be suceptable to clogging, particularly with larger shaving from a thicknesser for example.

Would I be correct to suggest the Thein model is for a shop vac (with smaller shavings and dust) rather than for a system linked up to a dedicated DC with 4" ports???

Got the idea from messrs Heath & Robinson just used an old traffic co! er discarded plastic funnel and a few bits of mdf easy peasy :lol:
