Made a cyclone dust separator box - sides/bottom 12mm ply, top 18mm MDF. Hooked up to my Wickes 20L vac. Will be adding a HEPA filter to the vac and a longer hose (Cen-Tec probably) for the tool later.

I'm sorry to necro thread this, but I'm looking to get going with some cost effective extraction for my power tools.

What tools do you hook up to this and how effective do you feel the Wickes vac is?

Any handheld powertool will work fine with a plastic cyclone.
Machinery generally no - that sort of extraction is inadequate.
As 95%+ of the dust is going to end up in the cyclone bin, all you need is a small vacuum with a strong motor (1000W, not these new EU compliant 600 - 800W things). Slightly older Numatic, Nilfisk or Karcher vacs are all good choices. They are likely to be a bit quieter than a cheap shop vac and will have a better quality motor / turbine inside them. Shop carefully and you might find a good used vac for £30 to £50.
A brand new replacement motor for most Numatics only costs £70-100.

Hi Codaamok - all the info that Sideways gives is relevant. To answer your questions based on my setup……

…..I have added a 6m Cen-Tec hose that I connect my tools to and added the HEPA filter. The Wickes vac lives in the loft space above my garage so it both keeps it out the way and reduces the sound level I hear (when not using ear defenders). The tools I connect to it are track saw, small bandsaw, scroll saw, random orbit sanders, and as just the hose for my bench drill and clean up.

I don’t have a lathe or machines that produce wood chips so you could say I’m just collecting dust.

I am happy with the performance of the Wickes vac (1250W). If it failed I would either buy another one or look down the Numatic etc. route.

Hope this answers your questions. Happy to answer any follow up you may have.
