Got this a while back but done nothing with yet, Its a 12" Robinson, Does anyone know what speed the cutter block should run at, as at the moment it seems awful slow at 3000 rpm

Depends on the block diameter and number of cutters.
As a guide, my planer has a 70mm dia block, three cutters and turns at 5200 rpm

Without knowing how the blades are clamped into that old block I would not want to run it any faster, its quite possible it has not got a safety type block that wedges the holder tighter with the centrifugal force.

There is usually a max and min speed that should be etched/stamped on the cutterhead, though if its old this may have worn away. (may be just the max)
A 70 mm block on an edgebanding machine could run up to 18,000 rpm....but thats a totally different type of machine.
can you take some pics of the block itself?
As said above the rpm is partly determined by the diameter but also the number of wings and the feed speed.

Many thanks for the replies chaps.

Iv just discovered J. Priestley & Son and phoned them up, talked to a really nice older chap who seems to know everything there is to know about Robinsons, he says its at least 70 years old going off the the block bearings and should indeed run at around 3000 rpm.

The only other planer I can compare it with is my HM2 combi which runs around 6000 and the finish is not a million miles apart on both of them with new blades in each

So, sorry for mithering you

I think i'm just getting old.

It's really weird Allan...I am in the throws of reading all three volumes of the excellent and quaint..."The Modern Carpenter and Joiner" which is written late 20s early 30s from what I can work out....

There in the section on machine tools was the Robinson Spindle Moulder...

How very strange. I can scan those pages if you are interested though there is nothing special...just quaint info.
